ROHAN TARANG

We have spent almost 5 years in Rohan Tarang.
This evening, a young lady who is a member of the managing committee told me that the society wanted to start an in-house magazine (ezine) for residents of Rohan Tarang and she wanted to use a paragraph from a review of Rohan Tarang I had written 4 years ago on completion of our one year stay in Rohan Tarang.
I am posting the paragraph once more for her convenience.
ROHAN TARANG WAKAD PUNE
Rohan Tarang is a nice place to live at the best location in Wakad Pune.
Well designed bright and airy apartments, nice friendly cosmopolitan IT crowd, good ambiance and superb view of the Mula River, well connected yet quiet and relatively unpolluted, Rohan Tarang is the only residential complex in South Wakad, quite far away from the din and bustle of North Wakad which has become an overcrowded concrete jungle.
Luckily, this place is not in the middle of a concrete jungle and you do not feel boxed-in by huge buildings surrounding you like in most places in Pune, and in the proliferating townships on the other side of the road in Wakad. Here you have a much better view than your neighbour’s balcony.

There is plenty of natural light, plenty of fresh air, a breathtaking view of the Mula River and its verdant surroundings, and a “feel good” vibe, which fills me with cheer and makes me happy to stay at home.

I must say that the architect who designed these apartments in Rohan Tarang has done a real good job. One gets a feeling of roominess, brightness and liveliness here as this is not one of those ubiquitous cramped matchbox design flats, proliferating all over Pune, where one feels claustrophobic and uncomfortable the moment one enters.

The proximity of Rohan Tarang to Wakad Village enables one to enjoy a nice village-like atmosphere and one can walk down to to the verdant, unpolluted and uncrowded, serene and green park in the Mhatoba Temple Gardens on the banks of Mula River.

The cons are the lack of social infrastructure required for modern living and non-availability of Landline Phone and Broadband Internet Connectivity (BSNL, Airtel and other ISPs have not laid optical fiber cables so far to South Wakad) and erratic internet and cell phone connectivity via wireless.

Hopefully things will improve as development takes place.

(Above Review Written by Me in November 2011)

PS: Plenty has changed in Wakad since then (Nov 2011).

The best thing is the proliferation of new restaurants, eateries and shopping places that have sprung up nearby in Wakad and Hinjewadi.

But I am still patiently waiting for the Xion Multiplex to open, since, as of now, there is no cinema anywhere nearby, and you have to go all the way to ESquare Multiplex which is 12 Kms away.

And, of course, there is no Mall in Wakad either, but then, I don’t miss that too much.

WAKAD PUNE FOOD GUIDE - BIRYANI

WAKAD FOOD GUIDE

3 GOOD HOME-DELIVERY BIRYANIS IN WAKAD PUNE
Value-For-Money “Eating In”
By
VIKRAM KARVE

When I lived in happening places like South Mumbai and New Delhi – we used to “eat out”.

But after relocating to Wakad (in the suburbs of Pune) – we “eat in”.

Sadly – in Wakad – there are very few decent affordable ‘value-for-money’ restaurants where you can “eat out”.

So if you are a foodie – and you happen to live in Wakad – then – whenever you feel hungry – the best thing to do is to pick up your mobile phone and order your food “home delivery” and “eat in” – yes – it is best to eat outside food in the comfort of your home.

When I lived in Mumbai from 2000 – 2006 (the best 6 years of my life) – I used to go on super-long “food walks” every evening (and on Sunday Mornings).

I started blogging about my foodie adventures in Mumbai – and some of these “foodie” blog posts were compiled in a book APPETITE FOR A STROLL (my first book which made me a “published author”).

And for the benefit of fellow foodies in Mumbai – on my blog – I posted “A Trencherman’s ‘Value-for-Money’ Mumbai Good Food Guide” (yes – as far as food is considered – I am a simple earthy down-to-earth ‘trencherman’ and not a high-falutin ‘connoisseur’ of ‘fine dining’ food).

This “food guide” was more of a “laundry list” of my favourite eateries – I had walked there – and I had eaten there.

Click the link below to open My Mumbai Food Guide in a new window.

But remember to come back here for my 3 favourite biryanis in Wakad – or maybe it is best for you to read my Trencherman’s ‘Mumbai Food Guide’ later.

Now – coming back to the ‘back of beyond’ Wakad – I have been going on my “food-walks” here too – but mainly to pick up menu cards – since most of the places open later in the evening.

I was tempted to post a similar Trencherman’s “Laundry List” for Wakad – but I desisted from doing so for reasons which are obvious if you read my long-winded incoherent Mumbai Food Guide.

Nowadays – readers have very small spans of attention – and are looking for specific information.

So – I will keep posting “cuisine wise” details of my favourite ‘home-delivery’ foodie places in Wakad – and since taste is a subjective aspect – I will refrain from ‘grading’ or giving “stars”.

Today – let me tell you about my 3 favourite home-delivery Chicken Biryanis in Wakad (phone/mobile numbers in brackets).

Why Chicken Biryani?

Well – ever since I have come to Pune – I avoid Mutton Biryani – because – in general – the quality of mutton in Pune is not that consistent – so I have Mutton Biryani only in certain select places like Dorabjee, Blue Nile, Rashid Khan etc

3 GOOD HOME-DELIVERY BIRYANIS IN WAKAD PUNE

1. Dum Dumaadum (8087000274/8087000275)

I like their signature “Chicken Matka Dum Biryani” which is cooked in a clay pot and delivered sealed in the clay pot. The mildly spiced ‘Chicken Awadhi Dum Biryani’ is also delicious.

2. Desi Chulha (7030446969/7030666969)

Their ‘chulha cooked’ Chicken Dum Biryani has a unique mint (pudina) flavor and leaves a wonderful aftertaste on the tongue.

3. Eatsome (020-22934341/020-60509080/09325545355) www.eatsome.in

Eatsome serves 2 Types of Chicken Biryani – Chicken Tikka Biryani (which is reminiscent of the one served at Noorani on Tardeo Road in Mumbai and George on East Street in Pune) and the rather spicy Chicken Bhuna Biryani.

As I said earlier – I am not going to “judge” these Biryanis.

But I will tell you ‘How to Judge a Biryani’ – so whenever you order a Biryani you can ‘evaluate’ it yourself.

Just click the link below and read my foodie article on HOW TO JUDGE A BIRYANI

PS: Dear Fellow Foodie: This evening – during my “foodwalk” in Wakad – I may have a quick bite at a place called “Singh Saab Da Burger” – and – of course – I will tell you all about it.

Till then – HAPPY EATING

FOOD REVIEW - DUM DUMAADUM – My Favorite Home Delivery Food in Wakad Pune

DUM DUMAADUM – My Favorite Home Delivery Food in Wakad Pune
Food Review
By
VIKRAM KARVE

Three and a half years ago, after my retirement, I relocated to my home in Wakad near Pune.

Being a “foodie” I was most disappointed to see that there was not even a single decent value-for-money family restaurant in Wakad.

Even now whenever we feel like having a Dosa in decent surroundings, my wife and I head to Tamanna at Hinjewadi, or to Shivsagar at Aundh).

However, there were a few restaurants which provided home-delivery of food – and this was the best option to “eating out”.

It was while exploring various “home delivery” joints that I chanced upon “DUM DUMAADUM”.

And since then, “Dum Dumaadum” has become one of my favorites.

The food is good, the menu has a fair variety of dishes, the service is quick and the prices are reasonable.

“Dum Dumaadum” has proved to be quite a boon when guests suddenly land up demanding a meal – you order, and they deliver quickly, and the food is appreciated by all.

The menu focuses on North Indian Cuisine, with the ubiquitous “Chinese” option.

My favorite is the Dum Biryani (they have a signature “Matka Biryani” too which is superb).

It is a tasty biryani – not too spicy, not too oily – and quite fulfilling, though I miss the “potato” which is must in authentic biryani.

I love the Tandoori Chicken which is deliciously mouthwatering – this is also a “must order” dish.

Of the curry dishes, the Zafrani Butter Chicken deserves special mention.

In fact, Butter Chicken is the only curry dish I like from the menu – I found the other curry dishes too spicy for my liking.

There is Chinese Cuisine and a variety of starters on the menu which are pretty good.

There are vegetarian dishes on the menu too, but then “Dum Dumaadam” is essentially a non-vegetarian’s delight.

Recently, they have added Rolls and Wraps, and pulao too, all of which I will try soon.

I see from the home delivery menu that, in addition to their Wakad outlet, “Dum Dumaadum” has opened many branches all over the western suburbs of Pune, in Aundh, Baner, Pashan, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Karvenagar, Warje etc, and there is an outlet in Navi Mumbai at Khargar too.

So, if you are looking for a tasty home delivery meal at reasonable rates, try “DUM DUMAADUM”.

CUSTOMER CARE

CUSTOMER CARE
Musings on Complaint Handling and Grievance Redressal
By
VIKRAM KARVE

An Efficient Customer Service Management System or Grievance Redressal Mechanism comprises five aspects:

1. It must be easy for you to lodge the complaint.

This can be either on phone or SMS or by email or on the website. (In today’s world of the internet, online grievance management mechanism is a must and the days of writing letters, submitting written applications and using snail-mail are a thing of the past)

2. Your grievance must be acknowledged in a prompt manner.

This is best done by a prompt call or SMS or an email giving you a reference token number to enable you to monitor the progress of redressal of your grievance / complaint.

3. You must be kept informed and updated regarding the status of your complaint

It must be easy for you to monitor the progress of your complaint as it is processed in the grievance redressal system.

4. Your grievance must be resolved to your entire satisfaction in a time bound manner.

A sincere and transparent attempt must be made by the customer care department to achieve “customer delight” by a mutually agreeable reconciliation of the complaint and insidious attempts to browbeat, bully, harass or confuse the customer must be avoided.

5. Your feedback and suggestions must be sought.

As a part of continual improvement a good customer care department always asks for post grievance redressal feedback and suggestions, acts on the comments of the customer and keeps the customer informed. Rather than just ring up the customer, it is better to obtain feedback by email or in a prescribed format. This enables the customer to give comprehensive feedback and ensures that the feedback is properly recorded for future action.

At present, we are experiencing a customer service issue with Axis Bank for the past 3 months.

We are stuck at stage 3 - we are kept informed of the status but our complaint is not being resolved. It looks like things are moving in circles.

We patiently wait for our complaint to be resolved.

Let's see how things progress.

We hope Axis Bank values Customer Care and makes a genuine attempt to resolve my grievance.

Maybe, it will make an interesting case study.

WHAT IS GOOD BIRYANI - THE FIVE TESTS TO JUDGE A BIRYANI

A GOOD BIRYANI
How to Evaluate Biryani  -  Five Tests
By
VIKRAM KARVE

A plate of mouthwatering Biryani is placed in front of you.

On first impressions, how do you judge a Biryani?

Well, as far as I am concerned, there are five basic tests you must carry out to assess a Biryani.

Test No. 1

SPREAD TEST

First try the “Spread Test”.

Pick up a little Biryani in your fingers and sprinkle it on the side dish.

The grains of rice must not stick together but remain separate.

The pieces of meat must be succulent, clear and dry, not greasy, and easily separate from the rice.

A good Biryani will easily qualify the spread test.

Test No. 2

AROMA TEST

Lift the plate of Biryani and smell the pieces of meat.

The Biryani must be pleasantly aromatic.

You must be able to discern the delicate sweetish fragrance and appetizing mouthwatering aroma of marinated spices.

The aroma must not be overpowering, sharp or piquant. A good Biryani has a subtle and delicately appetizing aroma.

The Biryani must pass the “aroma test” with flying colours as there is nothing more appetizing than a mouthwatering aroma…!

Test No. 3

TASTE TEST

Taste the meat, ideally mutton.

The meat must be well-cooked, flavoursome, succulent, delicious.

Then roll some rice on your tongue – the subtle flavour and taste of the spices must mildly and pleasantly come through, and must not be overpoweringly spicy, greasy or pungent.

Test No. 4

POTATO TEST

Now you come to the fourth and final test – the “Potato Test”.

Dig deep and search for the potato in the Biryani.

The potato must taste as scrumptious as the meat – that is the hallmark of a superlative Biryani.

And if there is no potato – well dear fellow foodie, tell me, can there be a perfect Biryani without a potato which tastes as delicious as the meat…?

Test No. 5

TEMPERATURE TEST
There is a 5th test for Biryani.

Has it been served at the right temperature with light aromatic steam coming out from the rice and do you feel the warmth on your tongue when you eat  the inner part of the mutton.

Ideally, a biryani must be served in the vessel (with dum) or matka in which it has been cooked and the vessel must be opened in front of you.

Epilogue

Last evening we had Biryani from Dum-a-Dum in Wakad Pune.

Well, it was quite a decent Biryani and it qualified all tests, except the Potato Test.

There was no Potato in the Biryani. I hope they rectify this lacuna.

Otherwise, by Pune standards, especially if you live in Wakad, Dum-a-Dum serves quite a good Biryani which I would recommend.

EATING OUT IN PUNE - SADANAND RESORT BANER - DECENT FOOD IN GOOD AMBIANCE

EATING OUT IN PUNE
SADANAND RESORT Baner - DECENT FOOD IN GOOD AMBIANCE
Review by VIKRAM KARVE

Last evening my family wanted to take me out to Dinner to celebrate my birthday. They asked me where I wanted to go. Unhesitatingly, I said: “Let’s go to Sadanand”.

Sadanand is near my house in Wakad (I can almost see it from my balcony). It is a value-for-money restaurant which suits my budget and the food and ambiance are good for a family to eat together.

And most importantly, to the best of my knowledge, it is the only eatery in Pune which serves my favorite Mutton Dish – DABBA GOSHT.

So we all went out for dinner to Sadanand which lived up to our expectations and we thoroughly enjoyed the eating experience.

Sadanand Resort is one the oldest restaurants in the Baner – Balewadi – Wakad area of Pune. I remember eating in Sadanand, way back in the 1980s, when the Dehu – Katraj bypass connecting the Mumbai – Pune Road to Pune - Satara Road was built (the Express Way was built much later and completed in 2002 or 2003, I think). After a rigorous drive from Pune on the old Bombay – Poona Road (as it was then called), negotiating the treacherous hai-pin bends in the ghat section, we stopped over at Sadanand for a hearty lunch, before proceeding to our home in the city.

(Those days, the drive from Mumbai to Pune took at least 5 hours, or sometimes 6 hours, so if you started from Mumbai in the morning, by the time you reached Sadanand, you were hungry and it was time for lunch).

When I lived in Mumbai I developed a fascination for Dabba Gosht

(Click the link at the end of this blog post for the recipe of Dabba Gosht)

The first time we decided to eat at Sadanand, I was pleasantly surprised to find Dabba Gosht on the menu. I had not seen this dish featured on the menu of any restaurant in Pune and that is why whenever I yearned for Dabba Gosht I headed for Sadanand.

The best thing I like about Sadanand is the ambiance. It is a well-designed restaurant. The main dining hall is circular in shape and is airy, roomy and spacious with a high ceiling, and is brightly lit and not dark, claustrophobic, drab and dreary like many Pune eateries. The moment you enter you get bright positive vibes and you can look forward to an enjoyable meal over delightful conversation.

We visited this place yesterday, on the 12th of September, to celebrate my birthday. The Mocktails are good, and there is a well-stocked bar too. Of the kababs we ordered as starters, the Chicken Malai Kababs were exquisite and the other kababs were appetizing too.

My regular order, Dabba Gosht, was okay – looks like the quality has gone down a bit – the gravy was yummy but the meat could have been more succulent like the dabba gosht you get at Noorani or Jaffer Bhai Delhi Darbar in Mumbai. The Dabba Gosht at Sadanand is good, but this inimitable dish is never as good as the ones you get in Mumbai, mainly because the quality of mutton in Pune is not as good as the mutton you get in Mumbai.

Our random order, Murg Masalewala, was a real surprise – it was an excellent chicken curry, as were the vegetarian dishes – Methi Malai Mutter and Navrattan Korma. The fish over here is worth a try too.

For dessert, I always like the fruit salad with ice cream and the kulfi is very good too.

Sadanand is a decent affordable place for a family outing. It serves tasty value-for-money food and is not too expensive like the overpriced eateries in the Western Suburbs of Pune (thanks to the bulging pockets of the IT Nerds who dominate these localities).

If you live in the Western Part of Pune, around Wakad, Baner or Balewadi, or are driving down the bypass road, and are looking for a value-for-money fulfilling meal in bright and airy ambiance, then Sadanand is a good restaurant to visit. And don’t forget to try out their signature dish – the Dabba Gosht.

Happy Eating.

WAKAD FOOD GUIDE - EATING in PUNE

“EATING IN” in PUNE

WAKAD FOOD GUIDE
By
VIKRAM KARVE

There are places where you “eat out”.

But if you live in a desolate place like Wakad near Pune, then you “eat in”.

There are no decent eateries in Wakad where you can “eat out”. So if you are a foodie and, by some bad luck, you happen to live in Wakad, then all you can do when you feel hungry is to pick up your mobile cell phone (there are no landlines out here in Wakad) and order your food home delivery and “eat in” – yes, eat outside food in the comfort of your home.

Here are a few places in and around Wakad from where I order my food “home delivery”.

This is just a “laundry list” of 10 eateries with contact details.

1. ADITYA  (Veg and Non Veg Meals) – 02065101088

2. INDIAN IN A BOX (Snacks and Light Meals – Veg and Non Veg) – 02022931800

3. MOTHER’S KITCHEN (Veg and Non Veg Meals) – 02032609482

4. HYDERABAD HOUSE (Biryani and Kabab) – 02032344966

5. VINISAIL (Wraps and Meal Combos) – 02060508885

6. SAUNDARYA GARDEN (Veg and Non Veg Meals) – 02032001007

7. THE SHANGHAI COURT (Chinese) – 0203254493

8. MAST KALANDAR (Veg Meals and Snacks) – 02060126044

9. KINGS PARADISE (Veg and Non Veg Meals) – 02060507080

10. FAASO’S (Wraps) – 02022934341 (Closed Down Temporarily)

And of course, there are the ubiquitous DOMINO’S (02022932786) SMOKING JOE’S (02022934000) MCDONALD’S (02066000666) and SUBWAY (02022932011).

And there are eateries like NAAZ (07875448695) EDDY’S KITCHEN (02065292757) GHAR KA KHANA and Rustic Taste Earthy Style (8796901018) which I have not tried yet.

As I said, the above is just a “laundry list” with contact details.

Of course, I have ordered from most of these places and I may have reviewed a few of these takeaway restaurants too.

I look forward to your comments and views on what you think of the food from these eateries.

Also, do tell us if you know of any good eating places in Wakad Pune, where you can “eat out” or from where you can order home delivery to “eat in”.

Soon I'll tell you some value for money places to “eat out” in Wakad (in case I find some and in case you discover some good place do tell us).

Till then, order your food home and “eat in”.

HAPPY EATING
