How to Travel on the Journey of Life

THE ART OF TRAVEL ON THE JOURNEY OF LIFE
By
VIKRAM KARVE

I once heard someone saying "the lesser the baggage the better the journey" or Less Baggage Better Travel.

I think this applies to our journey of life too.

We seem to carry too much baggage, all types of baggage (material, emotional, tangible, intangible, the "baggage" of power, wealth, fame, ego, pride...) and this "baggage" inhibits our smooth and enjoyable journey through life.

Maybe this apocryphal teaching story is apt to illustrate this point.

A worldly man seeking Nirvana, true enlightenment, renounced worldly life, took a strict vow of celibacy which was a sine qua non for attaining enlightenment, and headed for the hills to live an ascetic existence of a hermit.

He found a secluded cave and began his simple contemplative meditative life surviving on natural wild vegetation in the forest and began his journey towards his quest for enlightenment.

One day he noticed holes in his robe and discovered that there were lots of rats in the cave who were chewing off his robes.

The rats soon were nibbling at his toes disturbing his meditation.

Perplexed, he went down to town and consulted his Guru who said, “No problem. It’s simple. Get a cat.”

“A cat...?” asked the seeker perplexed.

“The cat will take care of the rats,” the Guru said.

So our wise man bought a cat and took it up to his cave.

The cat took care of the rats and the wise man was undisturbed in his quest for enlightenment.

A few days later the cat had eaten up all the rats, and famished, the cat started moaning with hunger.

The constant moaning and crying of the cat again disturbed the wise man’s meditation so the seeker again rushed to consult his Guru.

“Get a cow,” the Guru advised the seeker.

“A cow...?” the seeker exclaimed in astonishment.

“Yes. The cow will yield milk with which you can feed your cat and satiate its hunger,” the Guru said.

Now the seeker would spend some time milking the cow, feeding the cat and then settle down for his meditation.

A few days later the cow stopped giving milk and mooed loudly.

The cat too had started moaning again and disturbed by the moaning of the hungry cat and mooing of the starving cow the wise man ran to his Guru once again to seek his advice.

“Buy some seeds, plant them, tend to the plants and the crop will give food for the cow and you,” the Guru said.

The seeker planted the seeds which yielded food both for the cow and himself.

However now the man had to spend so much time tending to his garden, feeding and milking his cow, and giving milk to his cat, that he hardly got any time for meditation.

He rushed to his Guru who once again had a ready solution, “There is a young widow – poor thing she is destitute. She will look after everything and you can meditate in peace and attain enlightenment.”

It was indeed a wonderful arrangement – the young widow looked after everything, the garden, cow and cat flourished, and the wise man was undisturbed in his quest for enlightenment.

One day it began to snow, the temperature fell to sub-zero, and the young widow started to shiver owing to the biting cold.

Soon she could not bear the bitter cold any longer, so she snuggled into the wise man’s bed and tightly embraced him as that was the only way for her to keep warm.

Now tell me, which man can resist the tight embrace of an attractive woman in the prime of her life...?

The vow of celibacy lay shattered and there ended the wise man’s quest for enlightenment.

And with all his new possessions (the cat, the cow, and the woman), the seeker returned back to the material world and began to live a worldly life from where he had began his journey towards enlightenment to attain Nirvana.

The "wise" man was back to square one, much "wiser"...!

Dear Reader,

Read the story again, close your eyes and reflect on it.

Carry the story around in your mind all day and allow its fragrance, its melody to haunt you.

Create a silence within you and let the story reveal to you its inner depth and meaning.

Let it speak to your heart, not to your brain, and suddenly you will feel a sense of mystical epiphany when you realize the wisdom of the story.

Now you are ready to apply the wisdom to your own life and experience the inner meaning of the story till it transforms you and puts you on the path to enlightenment.

"The lesser the Baggage, the better the Journey"

I NEED A DRINK

The Golden Rule of Drinking Alcohol
Never Drink when you Need a Drink
By
VIKRAM KARVE

One evening a friend of mine landed up at my place and said, “I’ve had a really hard day at work. I need a drink.”

“I’ll get you a cup of tea,” I said.

“Tea…?” he exclaimed astounded, “haven’t you got some whiskey or something…I told you I’m feeling terrible…everything went wrong today…I desperately need a drink…”

“I know you are dying for a drink, craving, yearning, thirsting for that “soothing” sip of alcohol. That’s why you must not drink now. You must never drink when you need a drink,” I said.

My friend pleaded but I didn’t budge and gave him a cup of tea which he drank with great reluctance, and then he walked off in a huff, calling me all sorts of names. He said that I was  a miser, a “good for nothing” friend, but I knew I had done the right thing.

Don’t drink when you need a drink.

Yes, don't drink when you want that drink.

Don't touch a drop of alcohol when your mind or body craves for alcohol.

Sounds funny isn’t it...?

Let me try to elucidate.

Never drink when you need a drink.

Don’t touch the bottle when you are feeling any negative emotion like despondency, sadness, anger, irritation, envy, unhappiness, frustration, emotional pain, bad moods, down in the dumps feeling, or any negative vibes for the bottle will “unbottle” and release your pent up negative emotions and make you feel even more miserable and also spoil the mood of all those around you.

Let me tell you something I have observed in real life.

If you want to know the true character of a man, just get him drunk and what is hidden inside him will come out and his true inner self will be revealed.

Alcohol opens you up. That’s what alcohol does, isn’t it...?

Alcohol reduces inhibitions, makes you more talkative, more expansive and more expressive, loosens you up, and helps release, bring out and amplify your inner emotions, talents, passions, sentiments.

That’s why some persons become more creative after a drink or two – as the music, the poetry, the creativity hidden within you is unleashed.

If you are happy inside, after a few drinks you will start physically expressing your happiness boisterously and outwardly by laughing, cheer and bonhomie.

In high spirits, you may even articulate your secret unexpressed love, become amorous, romantic, try to realize your hidden desires and reveal without compunctions your inner secrets which otherwise you would never disclose when sober.

But the converse is also true.

By reducing inhibitions, alcohol may bring out the worst in you by facilitating the release of pent up negative emotions like anger, envy, dejection, despondency, frustration and these unleashed amplified negative emotions may result in undesirable, unpleasant and even disastrous consequences.

Have you noticed how some people get violent, argumentative, rude or even melancholic, moody, sullen, depressed, unsociable after a few drinks...?

Dear Reader, in my opinion, the best thing is to be a teetotaler and not to have a drink at all, but if you must have a drink please do make sure that you are feeling positive vibes and are peaceful and happy inside and never drink when you desperately “need” that drink. Yes, do not touch alcohol when you are feeling depressed or low or angry or have negative emotions.

Remember this golden rule - Never drink when you need a drink.

CREATIVE WRITING

WHY I WRITE
The Thrill and Enjoyment of Creative Writing
By
VIKRAM KARVE

There is a saying: happiness is a journey, happiness is not a destination; yes, happiness is the manner in which you travel the journey of life.

It is the same with creative writing. The process of creative writing is more enjoyable than the completion. It is the creative journey, the manner of travelling, which is more thrilling and rewarding than the material reward of success after publication of your creative work.

Earlier I wrote fiction short stories. I enjoyed the whole process of writing a short story – thinking of the idea, the theme, the plot, the characters, the setting, the writing of the story. During this creative process the story belonged to me.

Once the story was completed and published, it was all over. Now, the story belonged to everyone. It is like pregnancy – once a baby is conceived she is nurtured inside the mother and after the baby is born she belongs to everyone.

When you are in the process of creative writing you will transcend into the world of thought and reflection and your mind will always be filled with interesting thoughts and this will always keep you happy. Yes, it is true, the happiest people are those who think the most interesting thoughts.

The man who does not write is imprisioned in his immediate world in respect to time and space. His life falls into a set routine, limited to contact and conversation with his family, workplace colleagues, a few friends and acquaintances, and he sees only what happens in the world around him. But the moment he starts writing he immediately enters a different world.

I am writing a fiction novel now and let me tell you that I am thoroughly enjoying the wonderful process, the creative journey. First thing in the morning, the moment I wake up, I think of the story, the plot, the scenes, the characters of my novel, I transcend to a world of my own and throughout the day fascinating thoughts perambulate in my mind. This is truly a stimulating experience which keeps me happy and cheerful throughout the day until the last moments before I drop off into sleep at night .

I am sure that my novel will be good because I have put my heart into my writing and the way it is shaping up I am confident that my novel will be a success, but that is not my only goal or the primary aim of why I am writing every day. I want to enjoy the sheer thrill of the creative writing “journey” more than the “destination” of publication of the novel.

I will end with a quote on happiness from William Lyon Phelps:

The happiest people are those who think the most interesting thoughts. Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good company, good conversation, are the happiest people in the world. And they are not only happy in themselves, they are the cause of happiness in others.”

FAKE WISDOM

FAKE WISDOM
A Mulla Nasrudin Story
By
VIKRAM KARVE

A disciple interrupted Mulla Nasrudin’s sermon on teaching stories and rudely said, “You are talking all nonsense. I cannot understand head or tail of what you are saying. And your so-called “teaching stories” are at best poor jokes – they don’t make sense or have any meaning.”

Mulla Nasrudin calmly removed the diamond studded gold ring on his finger, politely called the man, gave him the ring and told him, “ Go outside to the roadside stalls and ask them the cost of this ring - for how much will they will buy this ring. I want to sell it – the minimum price is One Lakh Rupees. Don’t sell it for less than a lakh of rupees.”

The disciple returned after some time and angrily said, “You have made me a laughing stock. No one is prepared to pay One Lakh Rupees for this ring. They say this ring is not worth more than ten rupees.”

Mulla Nasrudin then told the man, “Now go to the best jeweller in town and ask him.”

After some time the man returned dumbfounded: “Mulla Nasrudin, I just can’t believe it – the jeweller paid Rupees Two Lakhs for your ring.”

Mulla Nasrudin looked the man in the eye and said, “Just as only a good jeweller can understand the true value of my ring, only the truly wise can understand the true meaning of my teaching stories. Yes, only the truly wise can distinguish between real wisdom and fake wisdom!”
