How to change your “Personality”

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR “PERSONALITY”

MUSINGS By VIKRAM KARVE

_____

PERSONALITY or “BRAND IMAGE”
_____

Every individual has a unique personality.

In a nutshell – your personality is your “brand”.

A Brand Image can be changed.

In a similar fashion – you can change your personality too.

Some call this “Personality Development”.

Personality is your external nature – it is the image that you project to the outside world.
_____

Remember:

You can build and develop your own Personality (or Brand Image) in the way you want.
_____

But first – before you attempt to develop your personality, you must discover your personality.

How do you do that?

It is simple.

Just ask yourself seven questions – yes – ask yourself seven sets of questions.

The answers will give you a clue to the seven attributes that define your personality.

_____

THE SEVEN ATTRIBUTES OF PERSONALITY
_____

1. PURPOSE
_____

What is your purpose in life...?
_____

What is the reason that you exist...?

What is your mission – your goal...?

Why are you where you are...?

What are the things that happen because you are there...?

Suppose you disappear – what would be the effect on others, your immediate world and general society...?

What are the things that will not happen if you were not here...?

Are you a part of a bigger system...?

If so – which are those systems of which you are a part...?

______

2. IDENTITY
______

Who are you...?
______

Who are you...?

Who aren’t you...?

(Who are you not...?)

Who do you want to be...?

When you become this person you want to be – who will you be then...?

(And who will you not be – once you become who you want to be...?)

Who is it not that you would like to be...?

Or – who do you not want to be...?

Your identity is ‘who you are’ – and how you think of yourself as an individual.

______

3. VALUES
______

What is important to you in life...?
______

Values are things (principles, standards, criteria or qualities) that you regard as most important to you.

Values govern your behaviour and are the basis for your day to day actions.

_____

4BELIEFS
_____

What are the things that you have faith in...?
_____

Why do you believe those things...?

How well do your beliefs serve you...?

What beliefs do you hold that empower you to reach your highest potential...?

What beliefs do you hold that limit you and hold you back from realizing your best...?

Beliefs are emotionally held views about what we see as being true about the world around us.

Our behaviour is organized according to our beliefs.

That is why – sometimes – beliefs are considered to be self-fulfilling prophecies.

_____

5. CAPABILITIES
_____

What are your core competencies...?
_____

What skills do you possess that enable you to be what you are right now...?

What skills do you already have that would enable you to be the person you want to be...?

What are those skills that you do not have now – but you would like to have in order to enable you to be the person you want to be...?

______

6. BEHAVIOUR
_____

How do you behave...?
_____

How do you conduct yourself...?

What behaviours do you project from within yourself onto others...?

How does your external behaviour impact on others...?

How is your behaviour impacting on the results you get in your life...?

Behaviour is what you do and what you say.

Behaviour is the external expression of your self.

Behaviour is not identity.

An individual is not their behaviour – you are not your behaviour – you are distinct from your behaviour.

One must not confuse IDENTITY with BEHAVIOUR – there is a distinction between identity and behaviour.

_____

7. ENVIRONMENT
_____

Where are you in life...?
_____

Look around you – have a look at your surroundings – at the people around you – and see for yourself where you are.

Are you where you want to be...?

What does your current environment say about your life...?

If you are not where you want to be – then where would you like to be...?

What things in your current environment would have to change in order for things to be better so that you can be where you want to be...?

Environment refers to what is outside such as the place where you live and work – the people you interact with – the tangible things that are out there – and the intangibles (vibes) – as well.
______

PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR “PERSONALITY”

______

These seven attributes (Purpose, Identity, Values, Beliefs, Capabilities, Behaviour, Environment) define your personality.

In the hierarchy of factors which constitute your personality – Purpose is at the highest level – followed by Identity – and so on – and Environment is the lowest level factor which comprises your personality.

Which of these do you want to change...?
______

Remember the cardinal rule:

Changes made at a higher level will affect the lower level factors.

On the other hand – changes made at a lower level – they may – or may not – affect the higher levels.
______

For example:

If you change your purpose in life – all attributes will be affected – and your entire personality may change.

But – a mere change of environment – it may – or may not – affect the higher level attributes – it depends on case to case.
______

Introspect.

Examine the seven attributes and discover your personality.
______

Remember the 7 questions:

1. What is your purpose in life...? (Purpose)

2. Who are you...? (Identity)

3. What is important to you in life...? (Values)

4. What are the things that you have faith in...? (Beliefs)

5. What are your core competencies...? (Capabilities)

6. How do you behave...? (Behaviour)

7. Where are you in life...? (Environment)

______

Do you want to change something...?

Go ahead.

Change your “Brand Image” – Develop your Personality.
