How to Build Self-Esteem

How to Build Self-Esteem

DO YOU HAVE SELF-ESTEEM...?
Musings
By
VIKRAM KARVE

Self-Esteem is much more than Self-Confidence.

The word “esteem” is derived from the Latin word aestimare which means “to put a value on”

Thus – your “Self Esteem” is the “value you put on yourself”.

Your self-esteem is your conviction that you are uniquely valuable.

When you have High Self-Esteem  you will have the capacity to live creatively  stand by your values, beliefs and principles  and you will have the competence to accomplish something vital to your individuality.

Is it possible to assess self-esteem...?

How do you recognize whether a person has self-esteem...?

It is easy.

Persons with High Self-Esteem do not need to prove themselves.

Yes – if you have high self-esteem – you do not feel the need to prove yourself to the outside world – you do not need to prove yourself to others.

Conversely  persons with Low Self-Esteem will be observed trying to prove themselves – they boast  they put others down – they show off  drop names  speak excessively  and they always talk about their themselves and try to hog the conversation  they keep telling you about their achievements and display snobbish behaviour.

People with low self-esteem are extremely self-conscious about their appearance  and – they desperately fish for compliments.

People with low self-esteem are unduly concerned about what other people think about them.

They are desperate to create a good impression.

They may talk in an imperative tone of voice  they try to pull rank and emphasize their authority and show-off their status, position or wealth – they act in a boastful manner – they always seem “keyed up” and move around in an excited manner as if in a perpetual hurry “to get the job done” and try to “dominate” others.

Look around your workplace and among your friends.

If you observe someone behaving in this way  be sure that he/she has low self-esteem.

Close your eyes and recall some of your own interactions in the recent past  professional and social  at work and with your friends.

Imagine as if you have gone outside your body – and you are watching yourself from the outside as you interact and converse with others.

Reflect and Introspect:

Did you display any indicators of low self-esteem...?

Remember  an important internal indicator of low self-esteem is that you feel excessively self-conscious as you try to "prove yourself" to others around you – wondering what they think about you – and this sometimes causes you to feel internally stressed-out.

You can recognize individuals with high self-esteem by their body language.

When they speak to you  they make good eye contact – and they are relaxed, calm, measured in movement  yet firm and decisive.

A person with good self-esteem will exhibit a quiet confidence – and will not fish for compliments.

However  if you do compliment them – they will calmly say “Thank You” – and accept your compliment with politeness and humility.

They are honest, humble and modest – and are genuinely interested in other people and their achievements.

They do not bother about external recognition – as they have confidence in their own abilities.

Persons with high self esteem are always genuine and never “fake it”.

The bedrock of self-esteem is self-acceptance

If you have high self-esteem – you will accept yourself as you are – and you will not indulge in “image management”.

Hence – you will never be afraid of being “found out” – since you will always project what you actually are – since you don’t have to “prove yourself” to others.

People with low self-esteem are always desperate to “prove themselves” to the outside world and impress others.

Such persons with low self-esteem often fall prey to image management techniques.

Since low self-esteem persons try to project an exaggerated or contrived (fake) image of themselves  they constantly live under the fear of being found out.

Do you want to enhance your self-esteem...?

It is simple.

Just start liking yourself

First – accept yourself as you are.

And then  learn to like yourself.

Don’t bother about proving yourself to others.

Take pride in your individuality.

Be your own hero

Start enjoying yourself  be proud of yourself  and when you feel you have done something good  don’t seek praise from others  but reward yourself for what you do – and praise yourself.

Remember to do this in all aspects of your life – at work and in your personal life as well.

Continual self-evaluation, self-acceptance and self-reward will produce a paradigm shift in your behaviour from being other-directed to being inner-directed.

As you build up your self-esteem – you will develop a strong sense of self.

You will start liking yourself – and you will start believing in yourself.

On the other hand – if you do not learn to reinforce yourself – and if you succumb to the temptations of image management to seek approval of others and get obsessed with “proving yourself” – you may slip and fall into the downward spiral of low self-esteem.

I will end by paraprasing a quote from Samuel Butler:

The advantage of doing your praising for yourself is that you can lay it on so thick and exactly in the right places

How to Build Self Confidence – 7 Tests

ARE YOU A CONFIDENT PERSON
Check Out Your Confidence Level
By
VIKRAM KARVE

Do you feel confident...?

Does your self confidence depend on your mood...?

Does it fluctuate from time to time depending on the situation or is it steadfast, unwavering and persistent...?

Is your confidence level the same in all aspects of your life...?

Do you feel confident with all people – or does your confidence level depend on personal circumstances and who you are interacting with...?

Does a crisis situation or adversity shake your confidence...?

How do your perceive your own confidence level...?

How do others perceive you – do they feel you are overconfident or underconfident...?

Are you genuinely confident from inside – or do you put an act  a fake mask of buoyancy  and make a pretence of outward confidence...?

True confidence gives you a wonderful feeling of self-assurance, aplomb and dignity – and this is evident and can be seen in your poise and deportment.

The hallmarks of a genuinely confident person can be encapsulated in seven distinctive traits

A truly confident person will possess a high degree of each of the seven attributes of confidence  so ask yourself these 7 questions and check out for yourself how confident you really are.

THE SEVEN ASPECTS OF SELF CONFIDENCE

1. DO YOU LOVE YOURSELF...?

You cannot be a confident person unless you love yourself.

Self-Love is the foundation of Self-Esteem which is a crucial sine qua non of confidence.

How can you be confident if you are not happy with yourself, your very own body and your unique personality?

Indeed the first step towards self confidence is that you must first love all aspects of your own self.

2. DO YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF...?

Confidence begins from within and when we love ourselves and do not seek the approval of others, we start believing in ourselves.

Self-Belief makes your fearless and enables you to cope with crises – because confident persons believe they have the power to handle their own lives – whereas unconfident persons who do not believe in themselves always look for support and assurance from outside – and they try to seek help from others to deal with challenges in their own lives.

3. ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH YOURSELF...?

To be truly confident  you must love yourself – you must believe in yourself – and  most importantly – you must be comfortable with yourself.

Yes  genuinely confident people are happy in their own skin and comfortable with themselves, as they are.

You must love who you are  you must not wish to be anyone else  and you must not seek anyone else’s approval about whom you wish to be.

Truly Confident persons are immune from the DISEASE TO PLEASE – and do not succumb to the log kya kahenge syndrome.

Confident persons are natural leaders with a strong sense of personal belonging who feel secure with themselves and who don’t blindly follow others or conform for the sake of conformance, but who chart their own course and inspire others to follow them.

4. ARE YOU AWARE OF YOURSELF...?

Self-Awareness is a key aspect of confident persons as knowing your values, your strengths and limitations helps you in developing your personality, giving a direction to your life, enhancing your achievements and accomplishments and boosting your confidence.

5. ARE YOU FEARLESS...?

Confident persons are not paralysed by fear – they rather act first and be afraid later.

fearless approach to life  willingness to take risks  to try out new things, innovate and experiment – and a pioneering attitude are hallmarks of a confident person.

6. DO YOU HAVE A THIRST FOR LEARNING...?

Truly confident people love to learn

They strive for continual improvement – and have a thirst for knowledge in order to achieve continual growth

They are innovative, creative – and try to make the most of their talents in order to realize their maximum potential – because they believe in themselves which gives them the determination, tenacity and sense of purpose to keep going even when others have given up.

7. ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR LIFE...?

Confident persons are happy, here and now  as they are  with all aspects of their life in its entirety.

They are content with whatever they have.

Unhappiness and discontentment erode self-esteem and destroy your confidence.

Happiness and contentment are a must for genuine confidence  and that is why confident persons always exhibit cheerfulness and optimism and generate positive vibes.

Many individuals are not very confident inside  and they lack genuine self confidence – but – they try to fake it – and they present an external picture of confidence by clever image management

But – trying to fake” self-confidence – this causes immense stress due to the fear of being found out

And  sooner or later – such charlatans are exposed – or they suffer nervous breakdowns.

That is why you must strive to be genuinely self confident.

So introspect and check out for yourself – how many of these seven confidence attributes do you have...?

Introspect on these 7 tests of Self-Confidence

Discover your strengths, find out how confident you really are and in which of these seven aspects do you need to improve.

Self Help : IF YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY – KEEP YOUR PLEASURES MILD

“MILD” PLEASURES GIVE YOU MAXIMUM HAPPINESS

This afternoon I relaxed on my bed while hearing melodious old songs on Vividh Bharati Radio.

I felt happy.

And – I remembered an article I had written 15 years ago based on this philosophical quote by Taoist Philosopher Mingliaotse:

“The art of attaining happiness consists in keeping your pleasures mild

So – let me delve deep into my SELF HELP Archives and dig out this article for you to read:

IF YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY – KEEP YOUR PLEASURES MILD
Self Help Musings

HAPPINESS  a Philosophical Approach

The primary aim of philosophy and spirituality is to help ordinary people live a life of happiness, fulfillment, inner peace and tranquility.

Every day you ask yourself:

How do I live a happy life?

Is it simple to be happy?

What is the art of happiness?

PLEASURE and HAPPINESS

Let us see what the Taoist philosopher Mingliaotse has to say:

“The art of attaining happiness consists in keeping your pleasures mild

You know that whenever pleasure is present you are happy
this is a fact that cannot be denied.

A pleasure is an enjoyable event or delightful emotion which is bound to make you happy
 at least for that moment.

Highfalutin philosophers and spiritual gurus may prescribe various impracticable esoteric paths of renunciation, asceticism or sectarian precepts eschewing enjoyment and pleasure as the sine qua non of happiness.

Yes  many Gurus prescribe living a staid ascetic life which entails eschewing of all enjoyment and pleasure as a prerequisite for attaining happiness and enlightenment.

But the fact of the matter is
that to the ordinary person  happiness and pleasure are inextricably intertwined

Yes  pleasures make you happy  and you know it.

Discovering simple enduring pleasures which you can easily and regularly achieve, realize and enjoy in your day-to-day life will produce contentment, fulfillment and happiness.

Pleasure is certainly not a bad thing in itself.

But wanton pursuit of pleasures is counterproductive
as it leads to over-indulgence and excesses  which bring with them disturbances which are detrimental to our health, happiness and well-being.

In your search for happiness you tend to indulge in lavish parties, unrestrained extravagance, conspicuous consumption, compulsive shopping, thoughtless profligacy, limitless spending, expensive entertainments etc.

You try to enjoy everything at once.

You want instant gratification by over-indulgence in drinking, eating, revelry and sensual pleasures
stretching yourself to the maximum limits possible.

At first
you enjoy yourself  and feel happy.

Then
you come to the point of satiety  and you begin to feel a sense of repulsion.

And
if you overdo yourself  next morning you wake up sick and feeling miserable with a sense of sadness and depression rather than happiness.

You may think that grandiose, ostentatious, lavish, unrestrained and intemperate indulgences will ostensibly make you happy.

But
– in actual fact  these over-indulgences may render you stressed-out and unhappy  and cause you harm and misery in the long run.

There is no need to overdo things in order to be happy.

Just keep your pleasures mild.

Enjoying a simple, tasty and healthy meal with your loved ones and friends
or just sitting quietly in solitude and leisurely reading a good book or enjoying melodious music – or taking a walk observing nature – or enjoying your work, leisure, hobbies  are some mild pleasures which will make you happy and keep you healthy too.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR PLEASURES MILD

Step 1 – IDENTIFY ALL YOUR PLEASURES AND MAKE A HAPPINESS LIST

It is simple to be happy.

The first thing you must do is to introspect and list your most pleasurable activities.

Yes
make a HAPPINESS LIST including all the things, activities, places and people that give you true joy, happiness and satisfaction.

Your happiness list must cover all aspects of your life

Make your “happiness list” as exhaustive as possible.

Step 2 – IDENTIFY “MILD PLEASURES” FROM YOUR HAPPINESS LIST

From this comprehensive HAPPINESS LIST
select those “mild pleasures” that you can enjoy every day – or very frequently – or very often  and which are feasible and viable for you to enjoy

Then
incorporate these pleasures in your routine  and fit them into your daily life.

See what happens.

Some “pleasures” that you thought would make you happy
actually do the opposite, don’t they?

Delete those
“pleasures” that you first thought would give you happiness
but actually made you feel stressed-out or depressed.

Yes
remove those things that you thought would be satisfying  but actually turned out to be unrewarding.

Experiment
make changes  be watchful  be dynamic

Do not hesitate to add new items to your list.

You can always remove them
if they fail to produce the desired results.

Fine tune your HAPPINESS LIST
– and religiously put into daily practice your happiness list – and experience happiness every day.

BE HAPPY

This prescription of keeping your pleasures mild will enable you to structure your life in way where your happiness will be in your control
– and you will find greater joy in your life.

It will be feasible and within your control to ensure that you enjoy these mild pleasures daily
– or at least fairly regularly.

With only limited waking hours during the day
these enjoyable events will begin to crowd out the unpleasant activities in your daily life.

This will make you feel fulfilled and happy.

Dear Reader
– start today  keep your pleasures mild so that you can enjoy these simple pleasures every day  and discover the true art of happiness  the art of living.

Discover your mild pleasures that make you truly happy and joyful

And do let me know your experience – did this simple philosophy of keeping your pleasures mild make you happier?

It is easy to be happy
 isnt it?

Remember:

The art of attaining happiness consists in keeping your pleasures mild

So Dear Reader  Take the first step towards becoming Happy  and start making your HAPPINESS LIST right now.
