CREATIVE WRITING

CREATIVE WRITING
The Story of a Writer and his Wife
By
VIKRAM KARVE

A woman got married to a writer.

Unlike other husbands, her writer husband did not go out to work to an office.

The writer “worked” from home.

After living for a few days with her writer husband, the woman noticed that her husband spent very less time doing writing.

For most of the day, her writer husband would sit in an easy chair in the veranda with his eyes closed, or sometimes staring into space with a blank expression on his face.

One morning, when the writer was sitting in the veranda staring blankly into space, his bored wife tried to speak to him.

The writer angrily shouted at his wife: ‘Don’t disturb me.’

The writer’s wife also got angry and she shouted back at her husband: ‘What do you mean “don’t disturb me”? You are just sitting there and doing nothing. You say that you are a writer but I hardly see you doing any writing. Most of the time you relax lazily in your chair with your eyes closed – or you keep staring blankly into space, like you were doing now.’

The writer looked at his wife and he said: ‘I am “writing” all the time.’

The wife retorted: ‘What nonsense! I have been observing your behaviour ever since we got married. You spend 90% of your time just sitting in that easy chair and doing nothing. And you hardly spend 10% of your time actually writing.’

The writer looked at his wife and said: ‘I am glad you have guessed the percentages right. Now you know the essence of what creative writing really is – writing is 90% creative thinking and only 10% is the physical process of writing.’

A writer’s life is a tranquil life.

What others see as laziness is really concentration – which is the key to creative writing.

SHUT OUT THE NOISE FOR PEACE IN YOUR LIFE

CLOSE YOUR EYES SIT IN SILENCE and SHUT OUT THE NOISE IN YOUR LIFE if You Want PEACE IN YOUR LIFE
WORDS ON A BENCH IN MUSSOORIE
By
VIKRAM KARVE

Today was a “noisy” day.

I am feeling hassled.

I close my eyes.

I sit in silence.

I relax.

And I remember those insightful and profound words engraved on a bench in Mussoorie that I read long back but words that have remained etched in my mind forever.

Agar Aap Shanti Chahate Ho To Pehele Shaant Rehena Seekho

अगर आप शांति चाहते हो तो पहेले शांत रहेना सीखो

Long back, more than 15 years ago, I visited Mussoorie.

During one of my long walks, probably on Camel’s Back Road or maybe near Lal Tibba in Landour, I saw some words inscribed on a bench, a truism that has had a profound impact on me ever since.

I will never forget those interesting words written in Hindi on a bench in Mussoorie:

अगर आप शांति चाहते हो तो पहेले शांत रहेना सीखो

(Agar Aap Shanti Chahate Ho To Pehele Shaant Rehena Seekho)

Roughly translated this means:

IF YOU DESIRE PEACE  THEN FIRST LEARN TO REMAIN PEACEFUL

Of course the word शांत (shaant) also means SILENT

Yes, SILENCE is the sine qua non for Peacefulness.

There is too much “noise” in our lives – Physical Noise, Information Overload Noise, Emotional Noise – internal noise and external noise – noise around you and noise within you – all sorts of noise.

Noise hassles you and is the biggest impediment to attaining peacefulness.

The first step to inner peace is to get rid of all that noise around you and within you.

Yes, if you want peace you have to shut out the noise from your life.

Go to a quiet place where there is minimal external noise, switch off your noise-making gadgets like cellphones, TV etc.

Sit silently in solitude, close your eyes and see how your inner silence dissolves the noise within you and you will experience inner peace and you will be in harmony with yourself.

That’s what I do every morning.

I sit in silence in the spacious airy balcony of my ninth floor flat in Wakad, absorbed the tranquil scenic view of the placid waters of the Mula River quietly flowing below, the peaceful verdant hills in the distance, the still atmosphere, the pure fresh air, and I feel a halo of soothing serenity permeate within me.

Then I close my eyes and let my silence dissolve the internal noise in my mind and body and it is only then that I experience inner peace and I realize that I am in harmony with myself.

अगर आप शांति चाहते हो तो पहेले शांत रहेना सीखो

If you want peace then first learn to remain peaceful

Remember this simple piece of wisdom.

Try it. It works. You can take my word for it.

MONDAY MORNING LAUGH - THRIFT AND FRUGALITY

THRIFT AND FRUGALITY

I was surprised to see my college classmate X enjoying himself thoroughly on a beach in Goa.

Hey, what brings you to Goa? I asked him.

I have come to Goa on my Honeymoon, he said.

That's great, I said looking around, so won't you introduce me to your wife.

Oh, she is at home in Delhi. My wife said that she has already been to Goa once before, so I came alone, he said.

What do you say, Dear Reader?

Sometimes the concept of Thrift and Frugality is taken to ridiculous limits, isn't it?

Have your Monday Morning Laugh, think about this story and enjoy the week ahead.

ART OF LIVING TIPS - HOW TO TRAVEL ON THE JOURNEY OF LIFE

HOW TO TRAVEL ON THE JOURNEY OF LIFE
Less Baggage Better Travel - A Teaching Story on the Art of Living
By
VIKRAM KARVE

A worldly man seeking Nirvana, true enlightenment, renounced worldly life, took a strict vow of celibacy which was the sine qua non for attaining enlightenment

He then headed for the hills to live an ascetic existence of a hermit.

He found a secluded cave and began his simple contemplative meditative life surviving on natural wild vegetation in the forest and began his journey towards his quest for enlightenment.

One day he noticed holes in his robe and discovered that there were lots of rats in the cave who were chewing off his robes.

The rats soon were nibbling at his toes disturbing his meditation.

Perplexed, he went down to town and consulted his Guru who said, “No problem. It’s simple. Get a cat.”

“A cat...?” asked the seeker perplexed.

“The cat will take care of the rats,” the Guru said.

So our wise man bought a cat and took it up to his cave.

The cat took care of the rats and the wise man was undisturbed in his quest for enlightenment.

A few days later the cat had eaten up all the rats, and famished, the cat started moaning with hunger.

The constant moaning and crying of the cat again disturbed the wise man’s meditation so the seeker again rushed to consult his Guru.

“Get a cow,” the Guru advised the seeker.

“A cow...?” the seeker exclaimed in astonishment.

“Yes. The cow will yield milk with which you can feed your cat and satiate its hunger,” the Guru said.

Now the seeker would spend some time milking the cow, feeding the cat and then settle down for his meditation.

A few days later the cow stopped giving milk and mooed loudly.

The cat too had started moaning again and disturbed by the moaning of the hungry cat and mooing of the starving cow the wise man ran to his Guru once again to seek his advice.

“Buy some seeds, plant them, tend to the plants and the crop will give food for the cow and you,” the Guru said.

The seeker planted the seeds which yielded food both for the cow and himself.

However now the man had to spend so much time tending to his garden, feeding and milking his cow, and giving milk to his cat, that he hardly got any time for meditation.

He rushed to his Guru who once again had a ready solution, “There is a young widow – poor thing she is destitute. She will look after everything and you can meditate in peace and attain enlightenment.”

It was indeed a wonderful arrangement – the young widow looked after everything, the garden, cow and cat flourished, and the wise man was undisturbed in his quest for enlightenment.

One day it began to snow, the temperature fell to sub-zero, and the young widow started to shiver owing to the biting cold.

Soon she could not bear the bitter cold any longer, so she snuggled into the wise man’s bed and tightly embraced him as that was the only way for her to keep warm.

Now tell me, which man can resist the tight embrace of an attractive woman in the prime of her life...?

The vow of celibacy lay shattered and there ended the wise man’s quest for enlightenment.

And with all his new possessions (the cat, the cow, and the woman), the seeker returned back to the material world and began to live a worldly life from where he had began his journey towards enlightenment to attain Nirvana.

The
wise man was back to square one, much wiser...!

MORAL OF THE STORY

I once read somewhere that the lesser the baggage the better the journey and I am sure you have read the Indian Railways motto Less Baggage Better Travel.

I think this applies to our journey of life too.

We seem to carry too much baggage, all types of baggage
(material baggage, emotional baggage, tangible, intangible,
the baggage of power, wealth, fame, ego, pride ...
the baggage of painful relationships,
the “baggage of the past,
the “baggage like the debris of broken relationships ...
all types of baggage which contaminate our minds and inner self).

And it is this baggage that inhibits and spoils our smooth and enjoyable journey through life.

Maybe this apocryphal teaching story is apt to illustrate this point.

So, Dear Reader:

Unburden yourself of all your “baggage”
and
TRAVEL LIGHT ON THE JOURNEY OF LIFE

The Lesser the Baggage, the Better the Journey

LONELINESS and SOLITUDE - The Difference

Do you know what is the difference between loneliness and solitude?
Here are two quotes from Paul Tillich which explain the difference between loneliness and solitude:

Two Aspects of Being Alone
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LONELINESS AND SOLITUDE

Language ... has created the word loneliness to express the pain of being alone.

And it has created the word solitude to express the glory of being alone.

Loneliness expresses the pain of being alone

Solitude expresses the glory of being alone

Paul Tillich

Moral of the Quotes

Whenever you are alone you can either feel depressed by loneliness or feel glorious in solitude

So, if and when you are alone, the choice is entirely yours - either you can feel sad and lonely or you can revel in your solitude

Dear Reader - Do you agree?
