I love nostalgia, especially movie nostalgia. That is why on Sunday Evenings at 7:30 I watch a program called Classic Legends presented by Javed Akhtar. I love the way he presents this program about stalwarts of the Indian Film Industry.
This evening the program was on Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Javed Akhtar mentioned that Hrishikesh Mukherjee always said that his favorite film was SATYAKAM (1969) which won the National Award for Best Film. Many felt that Dharmendra deserved the Best Actor Award for his sterling performance which is considered to be Dharmendra's finest acting performance of his entire career. Satyakam had a stellar star cast including the evergreen Ashok Kumar, the handsome Dharmendra, the beautiful Sharmila Tagore, and the dashing Sanjeev Kumar, besides others.
This film is about Corruption. When India got Independence the people had lots of high expectations and the main reason why these expectations were not realized was the rampant corruption which took root in the system. The story is about the trials and tribulations of an honest engineer trapped in the corrupt system.
If you are an oldie goldie you must have seen this film. If you are a youngster, do see this movie. I wish they show this movie on TV - maybe Zee Classic will show it. In fact, I feel that Zee Classic must show a few movies of the Legend discussed by Javed Akhtar the following week.
Till then, here is a song from Satyakam. Click below and watch Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Asrani at their best.
