Adult Education : a Teaching Story

ADULT EDUCATION

An Apocryphal Teaching Story
Short Fiction
By
VIKRAM KARVE
________

Here is an apocryphal story I conjured up long back when I worked as Human Resource (HR) Management and Training Manager.

I used to narrate this story to my trainees in order to emphasize the importance of work life balance”.

I called the story ADULT EDUCATION.

Do tell me if you like it.

I will look forward to your comments and feedback.
_________

ADULT EDUCATION
APOCRYPHAL TEACHING STORY BY VIKRAM KARVE
_________

ADULT EDUCATION
_________

A passionate HR Trainer once conducted an Adult Education Programme for semi-literate and poorly educated workers in his industrial organization.

The programme was conducted in the evenings after working hours.

In order to ensure success of this adult education programme – both the Trainees and the Trainer were motivated by giving them generous amounts of financial incentives like overtime allowance for participation.

This incentive of extra money ensured maximum attendance from the workers.

The Trainer too got a handsome amount of money as incentive.

Yes – the trainer got a generous amount of overtime for conducting Adult Education Classes.

Also – in addition to overtime – he was paid an additional bonus per worker attending his classes.

All workers enthusiastically attended the Adult Education classes – except one.

His name was Sukhi Lal.

Sukhi Lal was the only person who never attended Adult Education Classes despite the huge monetary incentives.

Sukhi Lal would rush home after work the moment the siren rang in the evening.

Sukhi Lal was almost illiterate but he was not interested in learning anything.

The Trainer was very disappointed with Sukhi Lal and he decided to motivate Sukhi Lal to join his Adult Education Programme.

One day the Trainer called Sukhi Lal to his office and asked him: “Why don’t you attend the Adult Education classes...?”

“What is the use...?” asked Sukhi Lal.

“You will gain more knowledge...” said the wise Trainer.

“I am not interested in gaining more knowledge...” said Sukhi Lal, “I am quite happy with whatever I know.”

Observing that the man in front of him was not interested in intellectual enhancement – the Trainer tried to lure him with financial motivation.

So  the Trainer said: “Sukhi Lal. Think of the Money. Yes – you will earn a lot of money. You earn while you learn. You will get plenty of overtime payment plus a generous attendance bonus. You will make lots of extra money if you attend these adult education classes.”

“I am not interested in making more money. I am quite happy and content with what I get...” Sukhi Lal said.

The exasperated Trainer then resorted to a last tactic to get him to attend the adult education classes.

He decided to humiliate Sukhi Lal in front of his co-workers.

The trainer decided to publicly shame Sukhi Lal.

Yes – humiliation and shame is a great motivator.

The Trainer was sure this would hurt Sukhi Lal’s ego – and the public humiliation would surely motivate him to attend the adult education programme.

At lunchtime – in the canteen – the Trainer called Sukhi Lal and all the other workers who attended adult education classes.

The Trainer indicated to everyone else to keep silent.

Then  in the presence of all the “educated” co-workers – the Trainer asked Sukhi Lal“Who was Issac Newton...?”

“I don’t know...” Sukhi Lal said.

“See. Everyone knows this and you don’t know. Just see how ignorant you are...” the Trainer ridiculed Sukhi Lal while all the co-workers shook their heads in agreement and mocked at the ignorance of the clueless Sukhi Lal.

“Who was Albert Einstein...?” the Trainer asked Sukhi Lal.

“I don’t know...” Sukhi Lal said.

“Who was CV Raman...?” the Trainer asked Sukhi Lal.

“I don’t know...” Sukhi Lal said.

Everyone laughed and jeered at Sukhi Lal’s ignorance and made fun of him.

But – the Trainer was unrelenting – and he kept on asking a hapless Sukhi Lal question after question:

“Who was Galileo… Faraday… Edison… Bhabha…?”
________

The barrage of questions and torment went on and on for a long time – until Sukhi Lal got fed up – and he decided not to take the humiliation any more.

Sukhi Lal suddenly stood up and asked the Trainer: “Tell me Who is Chhote Lal...?”

Chhote Lal...? Never heard of him...!!!” snapped the Trainer angrily, “Who is Chhote Lal...?”

“See. You don’t know who Chhote Lal is. But I know who he is...” Sukhi Lal said to the Trainer with an air of superiority.

“Who is Chhote Lal...?” the exasperated Trainer asked Sukhi Lal.

Sukhi Lal looked the Trainer in the eye and said to him:

Chhote Lal is the man who makes love to your wife every evening in your bedroom while you are busy out here conducting these Adult Education Classes.

It is you who requires Adult Education – not me...”

_________

With these words – Sukhi Lal walked away from the stunned Trainer.

MORAL OF THE STORY (4 Morals of the Story)
_________

1. Educate yourself first – before you embark on trying to educate others.
_________

2. Distant Vision sometimes obscures Near Vision.

If you are a “visionary” – you always tend to look too far  and sometimes – you cannot see what is going on under your very own nose.
_________

3. Physician – heal thyself.

Improve yourself and heal your own shortcomings before try to improve others and correct their faults.

_________

4. Have your priorities right and make sure you pay attention to your work-life balance.

Yes  WORK LIFE BALANCE means getting a full value from life – by ensuring a balance between achievement and enjoyment in each of the four quadrants of your life:

1. WORK
2. FAMILY
3. FRIENDS
4. SELF

_________

5. Daily ACHIEVEMENT and ENJOYMENT

On a daily basis  every morning  you must tell yourself:

1. I want to achieve something today – and I want to enjoy something today

2. I must manage to do both these things today – achievement and enjoyment. Then  for me  it is going to be a good day.

3. Through work-life balance  I must manage to do both of these things each day of my life.

4. Yes – I must achieve something daily – and – I must enjoy something daily – in all four aspects of my life (work, family, friends, self) – each and every day – for the rest of my life.

5. Then  I am going to have a good life  a happy, satisfying and fulfilling life  well lived.

THE FISH AND THE RECIPE

Ancient Wisdom Story

Retold by Vikram Karve
________

THE FISH AND THE RECIPE
________

One day a man went to the market and bought a fine Pomfret fish.

On the way home he met a friend who gave him a special recipe for the fish.

The man loved eating fish – and his mouth was already watering in anticipation – as in his mind – he was imagining how he was going to cook and then relish the delicious pomfret fish curry dish – the recipe for which his friend had given him.

Suddenly a large crow swooped down and stole the fish from man’s hands and flew off with the pomfret fish firmly lodged in its beak.

“You thief...!” the man shouted angrily at the crow:

“You have stolen my fish. But you won’t enjoy it – because – I have got the recipe...!”

“Friend-Zoned” : Part 1

Romance

FRIEND-ZONED

Story

By

VIKRAM KARVE

_______

Mumbai (then called Bombay)

Circa – 1970’s

_______

PART 1

_______

FRIENDZONED

_______

Nisha had “friend-zoned” me.

I was desperately in love with Nisha – but – Nisha had clearly defined the parameters of our relationship.

Once – when I tried to get close to her – Nisha told me categorically that she enjoyed my friendship – but – she did not want any romantic or sexual relationship with me.

I was romantically attracted to Nisha.

But – for her – I was just a friend – a buddy.

Nisha had “friend-zoned” me – and – I had accepted it – because – I desired her company – and – I had a glimmer of hope – that one day – she may reciprocate my love.

________

Dear Reader – when this story happened – 45 years ago – in the 1970’s – I didn’t know the term “friend-zoned”.

“Friend-Zoned” is the opposite of “Friends with Benefits”.

Between Nisha and Me – it was a pure platonic non-sexual friendship – without any amorous or carnal “benefits”.

It was a one-way “friend-zoning”.
Nisha had “friend-zoned” me – but – I very much had a romantic and sexual interest in her – and – I hoped that one day she would “un-friendzone” me – and – I would be able to make love to her – even marry her.
In the early days of our friendship – I did try to get amorous with her – but – she would politely demur and decline my advances.

Once – while we were sitting on the parapet on Marine Drive after the sun had set – I was overcome by passionate desire and I tried to kiss her – but – she pushed me away and broke in to tears – and said to me: “If you try this again – I will never meet you ever – for the rest of my life…”

“But why…?” I said, “I really love you…”

“If you really love me then listen to me…” she said, “you are the only true friend I have – and I want our friendship to remain forever…”

“Yes – we will always be friends – let’s have a more “intimate” friendship…” I was saying – when she interrupted me.

“No…” she said, ““Sex is the easiest way to ruin a friendship…”

“I don’t understand the logic in what you say…” I said, “I thought sex would cement our friendship…”

She smiled at me – and – she patted me on my cheek.

“You are such a simple boy – I am sure I am the first girlfriend in your life – that’s why you seem so confused – I have plenty of experience in this – you take my word for it – the easiest way to ruin a good friendship is to have sex…” she said to me, “trust me – let’s keep sex out of your relationship – if we keep our friendship at the platonic level – it will be a happy and everlasting friendship…”

So – Nisha and Me – we became platonic friends – and – though I yearned for her – I never made romantic advances towards her again.

The “Tomboy” : Part 3

The “Tomboy” : Part 3

Story

By

Vikram Karve

_________

THE “TOMBOY” – PART 3

________

My husband nods at her – and – he goes into his room to dry up and change his wet clothes.

The girl – Tanya – she looks at me – and she says to me: “Aunty – please make some Tea – Rohan tells me that you make lovely “Masala Chai” – and – make something to eat also – I am feeling hungry…”

I am aghast at her behaviour.

But – I don’t want to talk to this impertinent girl – so – I go into the kitchen – and – start making Tea – and – I take out the pan to make some Pohe…”

A few minutes later – my husband comes into the kitchen and asks me: “Who is this girl…?

“She says that she is Rohan’s fiancée – they are going to get married…” I say to my husband.

“What nonsense…!!!” my husband exclaims in surprise, “have you to spoken to Rohan…?”

“I tried – his phone is switched off – like he does at work – he should see my missed call and call back at lunch time…” I say to my husband.

“What about the girl…? Why has she some here…?” he asks me.

“You go out and tell her to get out of the house…” I say to my husband.

“Let’s go out and speak to her – let’s she what she has to say…?” my husband says.

I put 3 cups of tea and 3 plates of Pohe on a tray.

My husband picks up the tray, carries it out and places it on the table in front of the girl called “Tanya”.

I follow my husband and sit on a chair in front of Tanya.

Tanya picks up a plate of Pohe – eats a spoonful – and says to me: “It’s delicious – you are such a good cook – Rohan always tells me you make such lovely food…”

I seethe with anger at her impudence – how dare she make such condescending remarks…!!!

I can’t control myself any longer – so – I shout at the girl.

“Do you think I am your servant…?” I say angrily to her.

“No, Aunty…” she says, flummoxed, “why do you think that…?”

“You don’t bother to come and help me in the kitchen – you sit here like a “Maharani” – and – you comment that the food is “good” – as if you are a customer in a restaurant…” I say to her, indignantly.

“I am sorry, Aunty…” she says – I can see tears forming in her eyes.

My husband interrupts.

“Tell me – why have you come here…?” my husband asks her.

“I have come to take your permission to get married to your son, Rohan…” the girl says.

“Well – Rohan hasn’t told us anything about you – and – why hasn’t he come with you…?” my husband asks.

“He is afraid of you…” the girl says to my husband.

“Afraid of me…?” my husband says, surprised.

“Yes, Uncle – he ss terrified of you – the way he painted the picture – as if you were an autocratic tyrant – even – I felt scared…” the girl says to my husband.

I feel totally appalled – so – I say to the girl: My husband – a tyrant…? What nonsense…!!! Would I have been living with my him for 30 years if he were a tyrant…? Yes – he is strict and very old-fashioned – but he is a good man…”

“I am sorry, Aunty…” the girl says to me.

Then she looks at my husband and says: “Rohan told me you both are conservative people. He said that you would never agree to our marriage. So – he wanted us to elope and get married…”

“Elope…?” my husband says, angrily.

“I think I mentioned it to Aunty…” the girl says.

“Are you threatening to elope…? Are you trying to blackmail us…?” my husband shouts at the girl, “go ahead and elope – you are both adults – do as you please…”

“No. No. Uncle. I feel that marriage must begin on a good note. I don’t want your ill feelings – I want your blessings – so – I told him that I will marry him only if you give permission…” the girl says to my husband.

“And – if we don’t agree…?” my husband asks her.

“I will leave him and go away. I have had no happy relationships in my life – this is the first one – and – I want it to begin in a happy note – not on a bitter note by annoying you – I want your love and blessings – not your hate and curses…”” the girls says to my husband – and – she looks at me too.

I can see my husband softening.

I fear the worst.

This “tomboyish” uncultured girl called “Tanya” – she is nowhere near the image of the ideal daughter-in-law that I wanted. In fact – I had already started looking for prospective brides for my son. And now – my dreams will be dashed – if my husband “melts”.

I decide to call a spade a spade – and make things clear to this cheeky girl.

I look at the girl – and – I say to her: “You – listen to me carefully. You have no manners, no culture, no upbringing – you barge into our house unannounced and behave in a most rude manner – we should have thrown you out – but – we are cultured people…”

“Yes, Aunty…” she says, looking contrite.

“What “Yes Aunty…” I say angrily, “you want to marry our son – you want to be our daughter-in-law – you should have shown us some respect – though we don’t expect you to touch our feet as is the normal practice when one meets elders…”

“I am sorry, Aunty – I didn’t know…” the girl says.

“It is not your fault – you have not been raised properly…” I say to her.

“I am sorry, Aunty – I am very sorry if I have behaved improperly…” she says, apologetically.

“That’s okay – but – it is not proper for a girl to barge into her prospective in-laws house as ask them permission to marry their son – you ask your parents to come over and talk to us…” I say to her.

“I have no parents…” she says.

“What do you mean “you have no parents”…?” I ask her.

“I am an orphan – I don’t have any parents – both of them died in an accident when I was 6 years old – and I was sent to a boarding school – my whole life I have lived in hostels – I have never lived in a family – now – if you agree to our marriage – I will live with you – and you will be my parents – my first and only parents – and I will learn from you – manners, how to live in a family, culture, values – whatever you want to teach me...” the girl says – and she breaks into tears.

On hearing her words – I am filled with remorse and pity for this girl.

I walk towards her – I take her in my arms.

She sobs – her wet nose touches my neck.

I console her.

“Don’t cry, Tanya – we are your parents from now on…” I say to her.

“Thank you, mother…” she says to me.

Then she looks at my husband.

My husband says her: “Go and freshen up – we are going out…”

“Going out…?” she asks, confused.

“Yes – we are going to the Marriage Registrar’s Office…” he says to her.

“Marriage Registrar…?” she asks him, looking confused.

My husband looks at her and smiles.

“Yes – let’s go to the Marriage Registrar’s Office – we will come with you and submit the form together…” he says to Tanya, “the notice for your intended marriage…”

My husband looks at me and says: “Come on, get ready…”

Then – my husband looks at his watch and remarks: “I think it’s almost lunch break for Rohan – his mobile phone should be “on” now…”

“Yes, Uncle – I will check…” Tanya says.

“You tell your fiancé Rohan take the rest of the day off – we will pick him up from his office…” my husband roars, “he has a lot of explaining to do…”

Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey – Foodie Memories – Food Blog

MIXED FRIED RICE AND AMERICAN CHOPSUEY

MY FAVOURITE “CHINESE” FOOD

FOOD MEMORIES By VIKRAM KARVE

__________

A few years ago – my son wanted to take me out for lunch.

I want to eat Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey... I said.

So – we ate Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey at non-authentic Chinese Restaurant famous for its improvised “Indian-Chinese” cuisine.

And – after a long time – I enjoyed my favourite medley of Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey.

Both dishes comprise a variety of meats and seafood – and – I especially like prawns in both the Fried-Rice and Chopsuey.

Here is a picture I clicked that day:

Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey

This delicious lunch reminded me of a foodie post I had written some time ago on My Favourite Chinese Food.

Let me delve into my blog and pull it out for you...

MY FAVOURITE “CHINESE” FOOD
MIXED FRIED RICE AND AMERICAN CHOPSUEY
Irresistible Food Combination
Foodie Musings
By
VIKRAM KARVE

CHOP-SUEY

I do not profess to be a culinary expert.

Nor do I claim to be “highfalutin” connoisseur or snooty gourmand.

I am no authority on the “finer” aspects of “fine dining”.

I am simple trencherman who loves eating.

I live to eat (and not eat merely to live).

I believe in the dictum:

THERE IS NO GREATER LOVE THAN THE LOVE OF EATING

I don’t believe in “starters”.

“Starters” ruin your appetite

I don’t believe in drinking alcohol while eating.

Yes  I do not believe in drinking alcohol – especially before a delicious meal.

Alcohol dulls the taste buds.

I believe in getting down to eating the main course of the meal straightaway.

That is why when I go to a Chinese Restaurant  I don’t waste time looking at the menu card.

I just sit down and order right away:

Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey...

If Mixed Fried Rice is not available  I may settle for Chicken Fried Rice and American Chopsuey...

But  if American Chopsuey is not on the menu  I prefer to walk out of the restaurant.

MOUTHWATERING MEMORIES OF KAMLING RESTAURANT PUNE

My first memory of Chinese Food is in the Poona of the 1960’s – when there was a famous quintessential Chinese Restaurant called KAMLING on East Street (General Thimayya Road) in Pune Camp

Those days Pune was called Poona – and  there were 3 iconic restaurants on East Street – Latif’s for Mughlai – Kwality for Continental – and – Kamling for Chinese.

Now – only Kwality is still going strong – and they have diversified into all kinds of cuisine – multi-cuisine  as they call it.

Kamling shut down a few years ago.

Later  there was a popular vegetarian thali restaurant called Mayur in its place.

(Someone told me that even Mayur has relocated).

As Pune transformed from a salubrious pensioner’s paradise into a cosmopolitan metropolis – the food scene has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis.

Nowadays  there are many other eateries in Pune which serve Chinese Food.

But those days  as far as food was concerned  in Pune  Chinese Cuisine was synonymous with Kamling.

Whenever we were in a mood for Chinese Food  we visited Kamling.

Those days there was no concept of “starters” which ruin your appetite.

We got down to eating the main-course straightaway.

The order was simple:

MIXED FRIED RICE and AMERICAN CHOP-SUEY...

As far as Chinese Food was concerned  this combination was matchless  and the most popular too.

The “Mixed” Fried Rice was embellished with a variety of vegetables and meats – there were boneless pieces of stir fried Red Meats, White Meats and an assortment of Seafood.

Yes – there were delicious crisply fried pieces of tasty chicken, mutton, pork, fish, prawns – it had a bit of everything  and nourishing pieces of scrambled eggs too.

Nowadays – you don’t get the same high standard of Mixed Fried Rice anymore – so sometimes  I have to make do with Chicken Fried Rice.

And  to combine with the Fried Rice  there is nothing to beat American Chop-Suey.

American Chopsuey is a delicious stew  comprising a variety of stir fried meats, seafood and vegetables  blended into a sweet and sour tasting tangy vegetable sauce  and then spread over crispy fried noodles  topped with a fried egg.

It is a spectacular looking colourful dish  which whets your appetite  and is truly scrumptious.

Just looking at the appealing dish  and breathing in the appetizing aroma of its alluring flavours  makes your mouth water in anticipation.

I love American Chopsuey.

I find the delicious Umami taste most irresistible  and American Chopsuey combines perfectly with Fried Rice.

Like I said  some people say that Chop-Suey is not “authentic” Chinese Cuisine  but it is actually an improvised Chinese-American Fusion Dish.

After liberalization and with the advent of globalization  there have opened in Pune  a number of highbrow “gourmet” Chinese restaurants serving “authentic” Chinese Cuisine.

Many of these “highfalutin” restaurants do not even feature American Chopsuey on the menu.

But let me tell you  that way back in the 1960’s and 1970’s  in those good old “socialist” days of the “Licence Permit Quota Raj”  American Chopsuey featured prominently on the menu of every Chinese Restaurant.

American Chopsuey was the most popular dish  and  in fact  in those good old days – those nostalgic glorious unliberalized and unglobalized “Licence Permit Quota Raj” “socialist” days of the 1960’s and 1970’s  American Chopsuey was a “benchmark” or yardstick by which to evaluate a Chinese Restaurant.

Yes – we rated a Chinese restaurant based on the quality of the American Chopsuey they served.

Like I told you – sadly  the inimitable Kamling has shut down many years ago – and the so-called authentic” Chinese restaurants do not have this dish on their menus.

Well  if you are a fine dining connoisseur  you may say that Chop-Suey is “fake” Chinese Cuisine.

But  for a hungry trencherman like me  there is nothing to beat a piping hot combination of Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey.

Before I end – let me post another picture I clicked sometime ago of the quintessential delicious combination of Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey that I always enjoy eating...

Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey

Tell me – Dear Reader – Do you like this delicious combination of Mixed Fried Rice and American Chopsuey – and – where do you eat it...?

Happy Eating...!!!
