EATING OUT IN MUMBAI - BERRY PULAO at BRITANNIA and COMPANY BALLARD ESTATE

EATING OUT IN MUMBAI
BERRY PULAO at BRITANNIA and COMPANY BALLARD ESTATE
By
VIKRAM KARVE

Last night my son told me that he was driving down from Pune to Mumbai for a day’s work.

“Where are you going?” I asked him.

“I’m coming,” I said.

“Okay,” he said, “but you’ll have to spend a few hours by yourself.”

So we started from Pune in the morning, and after a few stops, we and reached Ballard Estate around noon. My son went for his work and I headed to Britannia and Company for my lunch – to relish a plate of my favorite Berry Pulao.

There’s only one place in India where you get the inimitable unique matchless Berry Pulao and that’s Britannia Restaurant in Ballard Estate Mumbai.

I read somewhere (I think it was Busybee who long time ago wrote in his foodie column in the Evening News of India – If it’s Berry Pulao, it must be Britannia.

The Evening News tabloid hasdisappeared long back but Britannia’s Berry Pulao is still going strong.

Britannia is a quaint restaurant. It is the same as it as so many years ago as if time stood still– the table-cloths with gingham checks with a glass on top and the menu card below the glass (one for each chair) with the restaurant’s motto written on top: There is no greater love than the love of eating

Dear fellow Foodie – if you’ve eaten and relished Berry Pulao at Britannia, my words will not be adequate to describe the unique gastronomic experience you’ve had.

If you haven’t ever eaten Berry Pulao at Britannia, read on - I will try my best to describe the delicious experience of eating Berry Pulao to you.

The Mutton Berry Pulao looks good.

A base of aromatic yellowish-orange basmati rice, topped with kebabs, crisp reddish-brown strips of fried onions, fried cashew nuts, and, of course, the dark red berries

I start off with a tiny sweet and sour berry to stimulate my tongue and then pick out a kebab from the top layer of the pulao, pop it on my tongue, close mouth and my eyes, press the soft meat between my tongue and palate, roll it, let it disintegrate and savor the heavenly flavor.

My appetite whetted, I feel so ravenous, that I just can’t wait to devour the delicacy in front of me.

But I am not going to “devour” the pulao greedily. I am going to do full justice to my favorite pulao by eating it mindfully, with full awareness.

“Mindful eating” – that is the true art of eating, with all your senses fully focused inwards to derive total epicurean pleasure.

The mutton, the kebabs as well as the generous chunks of well marinated and superbly cooked pieces of prime meat, is boneless.

The mouthwatering succulent pieces of mutton, substantial in size, are soft and tender, and taste delicious and satisfying.

The soft spicy kebabs are nice and zesty. The basmati rice is fragrant and tasty. The cashew nuts crisp. The ultimate delight is the sweetish taste of the fried onions with a hint of umami taste from the sweet and sour tang of the berries.

The berry pulao is indeed a heavenly medley of the choice ingredients, blending the fusion and symbiosis of tastes, flavors and fragrances.

In its entirety, relishing a Berry Pulao is a matchless epicurean experience.

Many a greasy and spicy “Biryanis” and “Pulaos” leave you feeling heavy, acidic in the stomach, hot and pungent in your throat and with a tartish feeling on your tongue.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

The proof of a pulao or biryani is in its aftertaste.

It’s that lovely wispy aftertaste that makes Berry Pulao my favorite.

Maybe that’s the secret of the “berries”.

As accompaniment I have a bottle of Roger’s inimitable Rasberry Soft Drink and I end my meal with a Caramel Custard Dessert.

I remember those glorius Mumbai days, when I have savored so many a “working” lunches of Berry Pulao at Britannia since I worked nearby.

Now I have to go all the way to Mumbai to enjoy a Berry Pulao. Yes, if you want to eat Berry Pulao you'll have to go to Britannia and Company in Ballard Estate Mumbai

Till then the only thing you can do is to enjoy this delectable dish vicariously in your mind’s eye.

If you ask me which is my favorite Biryani in Mumbai – well there are so many good Biryanis in Mumbai – Olympia, Delhi Durbar, Shalimar, Baghdadi, Lucky, and so many more. Yes, there is plenty to choose from as far as Biryani is concerned.

But if you ask me which my favorite Pulao is – there is a clear winner – there is no doubt about it – it is my all time favorite Britannia Berry Pulao.

By the way, can someone tell me the difference between a Biryani and a Pulao?

Of course, I know the answer. I am just trying to cross-check!

If you don't know the answer, if you don’t know the difference between and Biryani and Pulao, you just go down to your nearest “authentic” eatery, order one plate of biryani and also order one plate of pulao, then taste and test, compare and contrast, and find out the difference between a Biryani and Pulao for yourself.

Till then, dear fellow foodie, Happy Eating.

(And if you live in Mumbai, what are you waiting for – just head for Britannia and eat a Berry Pulao)

EATING OUT IN MUMBAI - KERALA CUISINE

Mouthwatering Mumbai Memories
FOUNTAIN PLAZA

KERALA CUISINE IN THE HEART OF MUMBAI
By
VIKRAM KARVE

From my Foodie Archives:
Mouthwatering Mumbai Memories  of a Foodie Adventure almost 10 years ago

Can someone please tell me whether the place is still going strong

If you happen to be in Fort area of Mumbai and are famished and hungry for a sumptuous lunch and are in a mood for Kerala cuisine, try Fountain Plaza.

There a number of eateries who derive their names from the erstwhile Flora Fountain (now Hutatma Chowk) and I am not referring to the more famous upscale Fountain Restaurant opposite HSBC Bank which is a Sizzler and Steak place, or Fountain Inn, the Mangalorean seafood eatery in Nanabhai Lane.

I am referring to Hotel Fountain Plaza, on RD Street off DN Road, near Handloom House next to Eastern Watch Company, my favourite Kerala Cuisine restaurant in South Mumbai.

There is plenty to choose from for the hungry carnivore -  Fish, Chicken and Mutton.

But not much of a choice for vegetarians, except in the snacks department, which you can try at Tiffin Time in the evenings.

To start off, I like the Fish Curry in white coconut gravy with Malabari Paratha (Parota) with a fried Pomfret on the side.

I pop a piece of the succulent fish on my tongue, followed by a generously soaked portion of the soft paratha in the delicious rich gravy, close my eyes, and press the juicy food between my tongue and palate.

Never bite, just press the tongue upwards against your palate and savor the heavenly taste as the fish disintegrates releasing the delicious juices and spicy flavor.

Next we order  Chicken Korma and Mutton Stew with Appams - it is a truly delicious combination which evokes nostalgic memories of Ceylon Bake House in Ernakulam.

We end the meal with a nourishing and wholesome Malabari style Mutton Biryani.

There are a large number of dishes on the menu including Chinese and Mughlai, but at Fountain Plaza it is better to focus on Kerala Cuisine.

In the morning on your way to office you can have puttu, poori bhaji or eggs bhurjee and while heading home in the evening, stop by for tiffin, and enjoy an evening banana based snack like banana roast, banana fry, banana bonda and banana pops which are the speciality of Fountain Plaza with a cup of tea or coffee.

I like Fountain Plaza.

It is a  no-nonsense Spartan eatery.

Mouthwatering food. Nourishing snacks. Lip smacking gravies. Satiating meals.

Value For Money eating.

So, Dear Fellow Foodie, the next time you are in Fort, Mumbai, do find out whether the place still exists, have a Kerala Style meal and tell us all about it.

EATING OUT IN PUNE - MUTTON CUTLET CURRY AT GOOD LUCK - Mouthwatering Memories

EATING OUT IN PUNE
Mouthwatering Pune Memories
MUTTON CUTLET CURRY AT GOOD LUCK
By
VIKRAM KARVE

From my Foodie Archives:

Here is a mouthwatering memory of a foodie adventure I relished a few years ago in Pune

I believe in the dictum – When hungry - Eat. When tired - Sleep.

I spent entire the Sunday browsing books at the library and bookstores loosing all sense of time, and at five thirty in the evening I found myself ravenously hungry, standing on Fergusson College Road in Pune.

At this odd hour, it was too early for “dinner”, and the only “snack” I could think of in the vicinity which would satiate my rapacious pangs of hunger was “Mutton Cutlet Curry” at Good Luck Café nearby at the crossing with Bhandarkar Road.

During my younger days, when Pune was Poona, I used to frequent three eateries in the Deccan area – Good Luck, Lucky and the Poona Coffee House.

Now Lucky and the Coffee House have disappeared and only the good old Good Luck is going strong. Those days, ladies rarely frequented Irani Cafes like Good Luck and Lucky, but now-a-days you will notice that young girls from nearby colleges sometimes outnumber the boys eating out in Good Luck.

You can savor a variety of delectable stuff at Good Luck – ranging from Bun Maska-Chai to Biryani – but today I ordered what I consider the signature dish of Good Luck, my favorite “Mutton Cutlet Curry”.

Soon, there was placed in front of me a huge crisp-hot heart shaped mouthwatering mutton cutlet floating in a bowl of rich scrumptious gravy. In the side dish, I seasoned the onion wedges with salt, pepper and a squeeze of lime, ordered slices of freshly baked soft fluffy bread, and got ready for the eat.

First a small piece of the substantial cutlet – it was heavenly – delicious wholesome fare made up of yummy mutton kheema cooked in plenty of spices dunked in egg and deep fried till crisp and crunchy.

I did not bite - that would destroy everything.

I let the piping hot piece of cutlet tingle my tongue a bit, and spooned in a generous dollop of the thick opulent curry.

My mouth was on fire – literally and figuratively, with heat and spice – and instinctively I popped in a piece of the soft soothing bread and pressed my tongue against my palate and let everything disintegrate and melt in my mouth, followed by a zesty piece of well seasoned onion to liven up things further with its sharp biting flavor and enhance the intense eating experience.

It was truly sumptuous.

Now it was time to use my fingers, copiously drench a piece of bread in the gravy, clutch in a piece of the cutlet and let the delicious stuff melt in my mouth; with a piece of the peppery onion from time to time to keep the sizzle lively.

And once I was fully satiated, what better way to give a befitting end to the fiery repast than a delicious cup of nourishing Irani Tea!

Sheer bliss; non-alcoholic intoxication at its best!

Café Good Luck is a decent Value For Money eatery you must visit whenever go to Pune next and are around Deccan Gymkhana or FC Road.

Relish the Biryani, the mutton and chicken dishes, and the lip smacking Kheema preparations.

If you’re adventurous try the jungli tawa stuff. And of course, do not forget to relish the yummy puddings, the fruit funny, the kulfi, and the signature must-have quintessential bun-maska with cup of fortifying Irani Style Tea.

Next time you visit Cafe Good Luck at Deccan in Pune don’t forget to enjoy the Mutton Cutlet Curry and all the delicious dishes.

TRENCHERMAN'S LUNCH

EATING OUT IN MUMBAI - Mouthwatering Memories
An Unforgettable Lunch

CULINARY SYMBIOSIS
A Medley Meal
by
VIKRAM KARVE

It’s almost lunch time, so I close my eyes and try to recollect the most memorable lunch I have ever enjoyed. My thoughts take me to Mumbai - the delicious eating experiences I’ve savoured in Mumbai during my stay there a few years ago.

Is it the Chicken Stew with Appams at Fountain Plaza in Fort, or the Fish Curry (Gassi) and Rice at Bharat Lunch Home, or is it the Berry Pulao at Brittania in Ballard Estate, or the Biryani at Olympia, or the White Chicken and huge fluffy Khaboosh Roti at Bagdadi...?

I’m confused... so I exercise my memory cells a bit more.

And suddenly I remember.

Oh yes, no doubt about it... my most memorable unforgettable lunch in Mumbai is that farewell lunch my colleagues gave me, a day before I left Mumbai, at Shalimar Restaurant situated at Bhendi Bazar in Mumbai.

We reach at one in the afternoon. At first impression I like the place – an abundance of connoisseurs thoroughly enjoying their food as is evident from their body language, high turnover, no nonsense, no frills, and businesslike atmosphere – appetite builds up in me and I know we have come to the right place. The place is crowded, there’s no place on the ground floor, so we go to the air-conditioned dining hall upstairs.

I don’t even look at the proffered menu card. I am going to surrender myself to my hosts - they will order and I will just eat.

First they order a hot “Chinese” soup which is nice and spicy, with lots of vegetables, sea food and chicken in it, and at the end of it I am voraciously hungry.

Then is brought in front of me for my perusal, piping hot and simmering, the signature dish of the place – Tandoori Raan Masala. I nod my approval, and it’s taken away for chopping up and slicing, and a generous portion served to me along with a Tandoori Roti.

I put a small piece of the meat in my mouth; it’s very very tasty. Spicy and zesty, it’s quite different from the Raan I’ve eaten at Karim’s in Delhi. Then I bash on regardless with the Tandoori roti and pieces of the delectable raan. In between, I scoop and devour the marrow which tastes delicious.

Then I find in front of me a dish of Shalimar Chicken Chilli – a specialty of the place.

It’s truly mouthwatering...!

For the first time in my life I eat a so-called Chinese dish – Chilli Chicken – with Tandoori Roti, and let me tell you it tastes fantastic.

Now my insides are on a delicious spicy fire, my tongue bracing with spicy tang and my nose is watering, so is put in front of my a glass of ice cold Shahi Gulab Falooda to quench my fires.

In a word, it’s heavenly... a perfect conclusion to a most enjoyable lunch and its exquisite flavour and divine fragrance remain with me for a long time.

Indeed a ‘medley’ meal – a “Chinese” Soup, Mughlai Mutton RaanChilly Chicken (ostensibly Chinese but the precise genre I can’t fathom or classify...), Tandoori Roti and the blissful soothing Falooda

A culinary symbiosis of gourmet food I’ll never forget.

Just writing this has made me hungry – really famished and ravenous.

How about you, dear reader – where are you heading for lunch...?
