FLASH FICTION - THE LAB JOURNAL

THE LAB JOURNAL
Fiction Short Story
By
VIKRAM KARVE

From my Creative Writing Archives - a flash fiction story

I wrote this story for a Flash Fiction competition long back, 6 years ago, in the year 2008.
The theme was journal and there were restrictions on word count so it is a tightly written taut story, the bare essentials.
The story was short listed, but sadly, did not win a prize.
I wonder why..?
Dear Reader, please tell me if you like this story.
THE LAB JOURNAL - flash fiction story by Vikram Karve
“See this.”
“It’s a lab journal.”
“I picked it up at the raddiwala.”
“Hey, I sent you to sell old newspapers, not collect raddi.”
“Open it, read the name.”
“John Morris.”
“John Morris? That is my husband’s name.”
“I know – unbelievable, isn’t it? Just imagine – your husband’s science lab journal, after so many years – and that too here, at a raddiwala in Delhi.”
“Let’s go to Mussoorie.”
“Mussoorie? Now? Are you crazy?”
“To John’s school. He studied in a boarding school in Mussoorie, but he never tells me anything about his schooldays.  I’m dying to know – let’s go, please.”
“Annie, be sensible. You have got to catch the flight back home to New York early tomorrow morning.”
“Please Priti, I have to go – this journal, serendipity, it’s a signal. Let’s go in your car – Mussoorie is only a five hour drive – we can easily be back by evening.”
Okay, lets go.
That afternoon the two women are seated in the office of the Headmaster of a famous school in Mussoorie.
“I wonder how this school journal surfaced after twenty years, and that too in Delhi,” the Headmaster says, with an expression of awe.
“I would love to know about my husband’s schooldays – photos, anything…”
“Well, I have joined recently; most of the staff too has joined recently. Why don’t you ask the Bursar  he is an old timer,” the Headmaster suggests.
Annie and Priti walk to the Bursar’s office.
They show him the science lab journal.
“Mrs. Bhalla must have taken this journal with her to Delhi as remembrance when she retired,” the Bursar says wistfully.
“Remembrance? Mrs Bhalla?”
“Our previous Science Teacher – John Morris was her favourite student – she treated him like a son.”
“Son?”
“Yes. John was an orphan – he lost both his parents in a car accident…”
“I know.”
“…and Mrs. Bhalla was a childless widow. They lived for each other – like mother and son.”
“It’s surprising – John never told me about Mrs. Bhalla…”
“John told you? When did you meet John Morris?”
“Two weeks back.”
“Two weeks back? That is impossible. Where did you meet John?”
“In New York. At home. John Morris is my husband.”
“John Morris is your husband? That’s just not possible…”
“Not possible? Why do you say that? I am Annie Morris – I have been married to John Morris for five years.”
“Look here young lady. There seems to be some mistake…”
“Mistake ? No. No. There is no mistake. Everything fits perfectly. John told me he studied here. Twenty years back, in 1988, he must have been in class nine, like it is written on this lab journal. I know he was born in 1974.”
“1974? Are you sure?”
“Yes. The 7th of September 1974,” Annie Morris says.
“Oh, My God…How do you know all this? Tell me, do you remember when you first met John Morris?” the Bursar asks.
“Of course I remember – I first met him in May 2001. In New York. Why are you asking me all this?”
“Come with me,” the Bursar says.
The two women follow the podgy old man up the slopes of Landour to the cemetery near Lal Tibba.
The two women, Annie and Priti, freeze with shock as they read the large bold letters engraved on the tombstone:

                 JOHN MORRIS
      BORN: 7 SEPTEMBER 1974
      DIED: 15 DECEMBER 1988
                   RIP

Annie Morris stares at the tombstone.
Her brain goes into a tizzy and suddenly she blurts out:
“If this is the real John Morris, then who is that man living with me in New York?
And if that man living with me in New York is the real John Morris, then who is this man lying dead for twenty years in this grave?

Blog Fiction Story No. 30 - QUICK BITE

Blog Fiction Story No. 30

QUICK BITE
A Very Short Story
By
VIKRAM KARVE

From my creative archives:

A short fiction story I wrote a few years ago

I am having a quick bite at Quick Bite…!

Hey, I’m not trying to be funny.

“Quick Bite” is the fast food joint opposite our office complex where we often rush out to have a ‘Quick Bite’.

I sit at a table for two, concluding my quick bite with a cup of coffee, when I see the office macho-man Raj enter Quick Bite for a quick bite.

His eyes search for a vacant table but the place is jam-packed.

He looks in my direction and I beckon him to sit on the vacant chair opposite me.

As Raj settles down I ask him, “All alone…? Where is your girlfriend…?”

“Girlfriend…?” he asks.

“Rita…” I say.

“Rita is no longer my girlfriend…” he says.

"Really?" I interrupt, “That's great. It is good you dumped that shameless nympho.”

“Shameless nympho?” he asks.

“Musical Beds - Ha Ha - Musical Beds” I say laughing.

“Musical Beds?” he asks.

“Ha, Ha … That’s what we called her in college … that nympho Rita … Musical Beds … just like we play Musical Chairs … Rita plays Musical Beds … but let me tell you Raj … you’ve done the wisest thing by dumping Rita,” I say, and I hurriedly gulp down the remains of my coffee.

Raj looks at me with a perplexed expression on his face, but I am in a hurry, and I have got a lot of work to do, so I quickly get up, pat his shoulder, and rush back towards my office.

Suddenly I see Rita talking to my colleague Chanchal near the entrance.

Chanchal waves out and calls me so I go towards them.

“Hey, you know what?” my chatterbox colleague Chanchal says excitedly the moment I come near them.

“What?” I ask.

“Rita and Raj got married yesterday. It was a very sudden secret hush-hush affair – parents’ opposition, you know. That's why they didn't tell anybody, ” Chanchal says.

“Really?” I ask surprised.

“Yes,” Rita looks at me and says, “I am no longer your friend Raj’s girlfriend. Now, I am his wife.”

With these words, Rita turns around with a flourish and walks towards Quick Bite for a quick bite with Raj.

CONDOLENCE CALL - My Favourite Short Stories Part 85

My Favourite Short Stories Part 85
CONDOLENCE CALL
Short Fiction - A Very Short Story
By
VIKRAM KARVE

From my Creative Writing Archives: A Very Short Story - Flash Fiction

The moment I returned they all asked me anxiously, “What happened? What happened? You found the place?”

“Yes,” I said, “I found the house and paid my condolences to the bereaved wife.”

Suddenly they all started speaking together, “His wife… widowed so young…poor thing…so unlucky…such a pity…so sad…tell us…tell us…how has she taken it… what was she doing?”

“She was in bed,” I said.

“In bed?” they all exclaimed simultaneously, and then there was a cacophony of remarks: “Oh My God…how sad…what a terrible way to lose her husband…she must be so devastated that she still hasn’t recovered from the sudden shock…how cruel fate is …she’s so young…she must be totally shattered…poor thing…it’s been three months now and she’s still bedridden with grief…”

“She’s not bedridden with grief,” I said.

“What?” they all said in chorus, and then the voices started off again, “Was it an accident…fracture…heart attack…stroke…depression…due to the unbearable sorrow…poor thing…lying ill in bed for three months…she must have taken it very badly…you should have gone immediately…helped her out…shared her agony…but how could you…you didn’t even know…you were abroad…you were not even here…but you immediately rushed to mitigate her distress the moment you came to know… ”

“Please, please,” I interrupted loudly raising my finger, “She’s not ill, she’s not had an accident, heart attack, stroke, nothing, she’s not in distress, she’s not taken it badly at all; in fact she has taken it rather well. She wasn’t alone in bed when I suddenly reached her house early in the morning – she was in bed with someone else.”

“What? Impossible…tell us…what happened…tell us…”

“What’s there to tell?” I said, “I reached Delhi in the evening and went to the address I had with me, but she’s shifted to Gurgaon, bought a swanky apartment in a posh township…”

“Must be with the insurance money…”

“Maybe, it is possible,” I continued, “By the time I found her place it was quite late, but I rang the doorbell. She opened the door, dressed in a flimsy nightie. I told her who I was.
She invited me in, offered me a drink, and poured one for herself.
We sat down on the sofa.
I didn’t see any signs of sorrow or grief on her face – in fact she seemed quite happy, pleasantly high, when suddenly a man’s voice called her out from inside the bedroom, ‘hey sweetie pie, what are you doing out there? Come fast, I’m getting cold’ and she answered back, ‘someone’s come’ and he shouted, ‘just tell him to vamoose’.
So I gulped down my drink, bid her good bye and beat it.
Then I went straight to the airport and caught the first flight back to Mumbai.”

“Bloody hell, she must have been two-timing her husband!”

“Maybe!”

“Maybe her husband knew all about it!”

“Maybe!”

“Maybe he didn’t fall off the balcony accidentally – maybe he jumped off!”

“Maybe!”

“Or maybe they killed him!”

“Maybe!”
