SHERRY KARVE (09 April 2006 - 17 December 2014) : RIP

RIP Sherry Karve (09 April 2006 - 17 December 2014)

With profound grief in our hearts we regret to inform you of the sad demise of our beloved pet dog Sherry who passed away this morning and went to her heavenly abode.

To us, Sherry was much more than a pet  she was our daughter.

Sherry entered our lives as a baby in 2006  she was our constant companion and showered us with love, joy and loyalty.

As far as I was concerned, my life can be divided into 3 parts:

1. Life before Sherry

2. Life with Sherry

3. And now  there will be Life without Sherry

Yes, for me  there was life before Sherry  life with Sherry  and now  there will be life without Sherry.

Thank You Sherry  for the immense love and happiness you gave us  for all those unforgettable moments of joy.

You have crossed the Rainbow Bridge  and I know you will wait for me  and when I come  you will welcome me with your trademark welcome bark and a vigorous wag of your tail.

We pray that may your soul rest in peace.

RIP Sherry Karve (09 April 2006 - 17 December 2014)

MY EARLY LIFE - an Extract from the Autobiography of Sherry Karve

My Pet Dog Sherry is writing her autobiography.
Here is an extract from the first chapter:

My Name is Sherry
Childhood Memories of a Doberman X Girl (Indian Hound)
By
Sherry Karve

Hi Dear Human Friends.
Bow Wow.
Please have a look at some of my pictures.

MY FIRST BATH - I WAS JUST THREE MONTHS OLD

BATH WARM MILK THEN CURL UP ON MY BROTHER'S LAP

MY DAD CARESSES ME AND SINGS ME A LULLABY
WHERE SHOULD I HIDE MY BONE ?

By the way, I am a budding writer too.
Here is my first piece of writing which I wrote when I was only seven months old. Now I am ... well never ask a girl's age ...

Do tell me if you like my story and pictures. If you do then I will post some more extracts from my autobiography about my delightful life.

ALL ATTENTION

Relaxing on the lush green lawn of my Bungalow
My name is Sherry. Sherry Karve. I am a naughty young girl, I’m over seven months old and I live with my family in a lovely spacious bungalow surrounded by plenty of greenery.

Baby Sherry cuddled up on her brother's lap

I wake up early in the morning, jump off my sofa, go to my father’s bed, rub my cold wet nose against his hand and give him a loving lick with my warm soft tongue.

He grunts and growls and opens his sleepy eyes, and the moment he sees me his face lights up and he lovingly caresses me and says, “Good Morning, Sherry.” The he gets up from bed and opens the main door to let me jump out into the garden. First I do my ‘little job’ at my favorite place near the mango tree. Then I generally dig with my paws in the soft morning mud and sniff around with my keen beautiful black nose to find out if there are any new morning smells, not forgetting to run and welcome the milkman the moment he comes on his cycle.

When I return I find that my father is back in his bed and my mother is up and about. She pats and cuddles me and goes about her business making tea in the kitchen while I loiter around the house.

She surreptitiously sneaks to the bedroom and slyly hands over a tidbit to my half-sleeping father under the blanket when she thinks I am not looking.

I pretend not to notice, as I do not want to spoil their fun. Earlier, when I was small and impatient, I used to snuffle out the tidbit from my father’s hand, but this spoilt his fun and he became grumpy.

Now that I am a mature young girl well experienced in the ways of the human world and I have realized that it is better to act dumb and let these humans think they are smarter than me.

So I go outside, sit down and put on a look of anticipation towards the gate and pretend not to notice my mother hiding and peeping through the corner of the window and giggling to herself.

Hey, Look at the eerie glow in my eyes - Scary Sherry

The moment the newspaperman comes on his cycle and shouts ‘paper’, I rush to the gate and fetch the newspaper in my mouth, gripping it just right between my teeth, and hold it up to my horizontal father, who gets up, takes the paper from me and gives me the dog-biscuit he’s been hiding in his hand, as my mother, who has rushed behind me, watches me with loving pride in her eyes.

Getting the Newspaper for my Dad
My brother and my sister, who till now were fast asleep in the other room, call out my name – “Sherry! Sherry!” – and as I dart between their beds wagging my tail, they both hug and cuddle me all over saying, “Good Morning, Sherry. Sherry is a good girl!”

Everyone is cheerful and happy and my day has begun!

I love my family, even though they are humans; and I love my house, my surroundings, the place I stay, the life I live – but before I tell you all that, let me tell you where I came from.

Posing with my Dad with a bit of my camera-shy Mummy in the background

My ‘birth-mother’ is a ferocious Doberman who lives in a bungalow in Kothrud in Pune and my ‘dog-father’ is unknown, though they suspect it may be the Mudhol Hound next door.

Yes, from the sleek way I look and my aggressive temperament, it is most likely that my father is the same Mudhol Caravan Hound who lurked in the neighbourhood.

For making my registration papers the vet wanted proof, so in the column against Breed he wrote ‘Doberman X’. Later they called me an “Indian Hound”.

I was a sickly weakling, hardly a month old, the only girl, last of the litter of eleven, and the owners were wondering what to do with me.

I was the RUNT OF THE LITTER.

Ugly. Sickly. Weak. Unwanted. A “Nakoshi” as they say in Marathi for the unwanted girl child.

And I was a girl.

Nine of my handsome brothers had already been selected and taken away, and the owners wanted to keep the tenth, the most beautiful and healthy of them all.

They had kept me all alone separated from my ferocious Doberman mother who was growling menacingly in a cage nearby.

No one wanted me and I could hear people whispering how ugly and weak I was and I wondered what fate lay in store for me.

It felt bed and hurt to be unwanted and when I heard people talking about sending me away to a farmhouse, or wanting to ‘dispose’ me of, I felt terrified and shivered with fright as I wondered what was going to be my destiny.

One evening a few people came over and a gentle woman with kindness in her eyes looked at me, and on the spur of the moment lovingly picked me up, and the way she tenderly snuggled me I felt true love for the first time.

This was my new mother.

She took me securely and lovingly in her soft hands, got into a car and they all drove across Pune, past Aundh, across the Mula River, till we reached a bungalow.

The kind woman was wondering what her husband’s reaction would be.

It was dark and scary.

I was terribly frightened and I cuddled up snugly my mother’s arms to feel safer.

Suddenly I found a tough-looking bearded man looking at me.

Shivering with fear I looked back at him in terror as he extended his hands towards me.

But the moment he held me in his large cozy hands, caressed me lovingly, and put his finger tenderly in my mouth, I felt protected, loved, safe and secure.

This was my new father and he had already decided my name – Sherry – the same name of his earlier canine ‘daughter’.

By the way ‘Sherry’ means ‘beloved’ – not the wine drink you are thinking about...!

“She was destined to come here,” my mother said.

“Yes,” my father said feeding me warm milk.

Baby Sherry
My Daddy and Mummy made a nice warm bed for me in a basket and put it below theirs.

And as I drifted into sleep, they both fondled me with their hands.

I felt so wonderful and happy for the first time in my life. I had found my true home and my family.

Sherry sleeping peacefully in her Den

I am feeling quite sleepy now so I’ll end here and have a nap in my den.

If you want to know more about me, my delightfully mischievous life, and the naughty things I do, please let me know and I’ll tell you all about it...!

Till then, here is picture of my Dad and Me. This photo was clicked, I think, when I was about 9 months old

ARE YOU A DOG LOVER - Pet Parenting Guide

PET PARENTING GUIDE - Bringing Up a Doberman X

PET PARENTING GUIDE
Bringing Up a Doberman X
By
VIKRAM KARVE

A few years ago a cute little baby Doberman X Caravan (Mudhol) Hound girl came into my life. We named her Sherry, Sherry Karve, and she brought a flood of happiness in our lives and I have enjoyed the best moments of my life with my best friend Sherry.  From her father she has acquired the sleek body, swift run, fearless nature, and sight and scent skills of a Hound, but she displays typical Doberman attributes like her pure Doberman mother – best of both breeds.

Sherry - an alert smile
My Canine Daughter's Name & Age:

Name: Sherry Karve. Age: Hey, you don’t ask a girl her age…!

In a Word, My Cute Doberman Girl Is:

Loyal, Loving, Strong, Fearless, Fit, Agile, Intelligent, Protective Friend

Her Best Characteristics:

Highly Intelligent, Easily Trained, Superb Guard Dog, Playful Active Loving

Her Most Challenging Characteristics:

One-man dog, does not like to be left alone, she has a very aggressive temperament, especially with cats, other dogs, and intruders who try to enter her “territory”, a Doberman needs firm handling at times.

DOBERMAN ATTRIBUTES

Highly intelligent and active, a bit headstrong, needs firm handling, superb guard dog, very protective of her family and territory, fearless, loyal, playful, wary of strangers and children, very easily trained, responds beautifully, needs lots of exercise, loves long walks, vigorous games, hates to be left alone and wants to be a part of the family, loves human company, a fantastic friend and devoted companion, robust and redoubtable.

Sherry - Nosey Nosey

DOBERMAN PARENTING

You must be physically fit and ready for outdoor exercise (playing and long walks) with your dog. Also you must be mentally agile and young at heart to interact with your dog who will demand a lot of your attention.

You must have plenty of space, a bungalow with a large playing area and a garden. In case you live in a flat, you must have the time, inclination and energy to take your Doberman for brisk long walks at least twice a day to a nearby ground for some vigorous exercise and also play rough and tough indoor games like TUG OF WAR

Sherry and her Bone

You must devote at least three hours a day exclusively for the dog, follow regular routine without exception and give mental stimulation to your Doberman by playing with her and talking to her. Yes, a Doberman is a highly intelligent dog who loves interaction and is always on the alert waiting for you to communicate and she will always try to communicate too. So make sure you talk a lot with your Doberman.

Talk to Me
Doberman is a one-owner dog, likes company of master, is overly protective of master and territory, hates loneliness. You must avoid leaving your dog alone in a flat (a bungalow in the compound is okay) and if you have to do so, talk to your dog, train her to be alone, and do so for the minimum time. Your dog will wait for you (even in a Bungalow) - and when you come will welcome you and want all your attention.

A Doberman is a superb Guard Dog and certainly not a very friendly cuddly dog for children and visitors. However a Doberman will shower the master with love, will demand love from her master and ask to be cuddled and fondled by the master.

Does not like strangers, cats, other dogs and children, and is always ready to attack intruders. A Doberman has a ferocious and aggressive nature and is suspicious of strangers and that is why it makes such a good guard dog. A good guard dog attacks and bites before it barks whereas a good watch dog first barks and then bites.

Having a Doberman is not advisable for families with small children. If you have small kids it may be best to go in for a more docile and friendly breed like Labrador or maybe a smaller breed.

Highly intelligent and easy to train. (I trained her to fetch the newspaper in just a couple of minutes - see the picture below). Always needs mental stimulation so you must play lots of brainy games like bone game and keep talking to your pet dog both verbal and non-verbal communication.

Sherry - fetching the morning newspaper

Sherry is an Ideal Companion and a very Loyal Friend

A Doberman requires companionship and hates to be left alone. So I take Sherry along whenever possible - the back-seat of the car has been done up and reserved for her. You will also have to adjust your social life. Since I take Sherry for walks in the mornings and evenings I cannot take on commitments during that time (especially I avoid evening social functions as I have to prepare Sherry's dinner and feed her in the evening after her long walk and exercise). If you really want to look after your dog properly you will have to give your dog a lot of your time every day on a regular basis and this will entail curtailing your social life.

A Doberman requires firm handling and lots of playing and physical activity.

Also a Doberman tends to be a highly loyal one-man dog and loves me more than the other family members and even gets jealous at times and growls at my wife if she gets too close, especially during our play sessions. Sometimes a Doberman may not like someone else getting to close to the master (or mistress) so be careful and don’t take your Doberman along with you on that mushy romantic date.

A Doberman is a very low maintenance dog. The only grooming you need to is to give her a nice bath once a fortnight followed by a nice vigorous brushing. She is a very clean dog who grooms and licks herself clean every evening.

So tell me, do you want to get a Doberman into your life?

And if you do, please don’t dock her tail or crop her ears as I think it is a cruel thing to do.

Also, let me tell you that a mixed breed or stray mongrel is more tough, immune to diseases and resilient than pure breed dogs, and properly groomed and trained they make excellent pets. So if you see a stray pup in need of rescue in your neighborhood, just go ahead and adopt it, inoculate and immunize the dog, give it your love, look after it and you will be surprised at how much loyalty and love you get in return.

Bow Wow.
