WE GET THE LEADERS WE DESERVE
Musings
By
VIKRAM KARVE
Any organization, especially a military organization, has two elements:
1. A LEADER
and
2. MEN CAPABLE OF BEING LED (Followers)
A deer cannot lead an army of lions.
The deer will be too scared of the lions following him.
A lion cannot persuade an army of deers to follow him.
The deers will be so scared of the lion that they will run away.
What then is required?
A Lion leading Lions
Both the leader and the followers must be “LIONS”
We then have a LION leading an army of LIONS
Yes, an army of lions can be ably led only by a lion, not by a deer.
And an army of lions led by a lion will be victorious in battle.
In an army, both the General and the Soldiers must be “LIONS”.
If the General is a “LION” and the Soldiers are “DEERS” then the cowardly Soldiers will desert the General and run away from the battlefield.
If the Soldiers are “LIONS” and the General is a “DEER” then the Soldiers will become frustrated, disobedient and restless and may either mutiny and overthrow the General or abandon the General in disgust.
Also, you cannot expect soldiers to be “DEERS” in obedience but “LIONS” in action.
By natural instinct, a person can either be a “LION” or a “DEER”.
We thus want every person, leader and follower, to be a “LION”
In other words, the qualities of leaders and followers are very similar.
The chief of these qualities (both for leadership and for followership) are:
(1) Knowledge
(2) Skill
(3) Determination
(4) Endurance
(5) Courage
(6) Cunning
(7) Imagination
(8) Confidence
No one quality is greater than the other, but the first of all is knowledge.
We get the leaders we deserve.
Are we “LIONS” - do we behave like lions?
If we conduct ourselves like lions then we will get leaders who are “LIONS”
Because only a lion can lead other lions - a deer cannot lead lions.
But if behave like meek “DEER” then we will get leaders who also behave like a deer - meek and weak.
In fact, deer can only be led by deer.
Think about it.
If you want a lion to lead you, then behave like a lion.
If you want a deer to lead you, then behave like a deer.
The choice is yours.
You will get the leaders you deserve.
