WHAT IS THE USE OF LOVE

WHAT IS THE USE OF LOVE ?
Philosophical Musings
By
VIKRAM KARVE

In materialistic world of today, you must earn money from doing something.

You must “gain” something from doing an activity - and in most cases the “gain” is money.

After all, you are investing your precious time, talent and effort in the activity.

So you must get your RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI)

Like I said, if you spend your time and effort pursuing some activity there must be some material motive for doing that - you are expected to gain something - it can be POWER, WEALTH or FAME, but mostly it is Wealth or Money.

After my retirement I spend a lot of my effort and time in writing and blogging.

Many people ask me:  WHAT DO YOU GAIN FROM BLOGGING ?

To put it in Hindi, they ask:

ब्लॉग्गिंग का क्या फायदा  ?

Most people ask me why I am wasting my time and effort Blogging when the same time and effort could be put to “good” use doing something worthwhile to earn money.

“You spend so much time and effort blogging, they say.

And then they ask me, What do you gain from blogging?

Why don't you monetize your blog?” other well-wishers say, “at least you will earn some money for your efforts.

Why can't people understand that you can do something for the sheer enjoyment of doing it, without having any material or ulterior motive.

To buttress my point I would like to quote an Urdu couplet I heard long back.

(I cannot translate it exactly but will try to give you the gist)

Someone asked a lover:

इश्क का क्या फायदा  ?

(What do you gain from love ?)

The lover replied:

फायदे का क्या फायदा  ?

(What do you gain from gain ?)

Why do you look for profit or reward in anything we do?

Why do you have expectations in a relationship?

Why do you always expect a RETURN ON INVESTMENT?

Why can't you do something just for the sake of doing it, for the sheer enjoyment of that activity?

Just like you do in the case of true love or  इश्क

Do you look for Return on Investment  when you love someone?

When someone asks you: What do you gain from love ?

You must answer: What do you gain from gain” ?

Like when the lover was asked:

इश्क का क्या फायदा  ?

The lover retorted back:

फायदे का क्या फायदा  ?

Would some connoisseur or philosophical poet be so good as to translate and interpret this urdu couplet for us in a better way please?

My Dear Fellow Bloggers:

Please tell me:

WHY DO YOU BLOG?

and

WHAT DO YOU GAIN FROM BLOGGING?

ब्लॉग्गिंग का क्या फायदा ?

More importantly, on a broader plane, think about all your relationships and activities.

Are all your activities profit oriented?

Are all your relationships motivated by expectations?

Do you always look for some gain or profit whenever you do something?

Are you always motivated by RETURN ON INVESTMENT or ROI ?

What is the use of Love?

Is there a ROI on Love?

I eagerly await your comments.
