A Mulla
Nasrudin Story
By
VIKRAM KARVE
Mulla
Nasrudin was strolling in his normal clothes (a crumpled unwashed soiled Kurta
Pyjama) when he met a friend dressed in a smart suit.
When
Nasrudin asked him where he was going, the friend said that he was heading for
the grand feast in the town-hall for which the elite of society had been
invited.
Being an
avid foodie, Nasrudin rushed to the place as quickly as he could.
When the
Ushers at the entrance saw the shabbily dressed Nasrudin in his filthy crumpled
clothes they thought he was a beggar so they threw him out shouting that this
grand feast was for the elite of society and not for riffraff.
Since there
was still some time for the feast to begin, Nasrudin rushed home.
He dressed
himself in his best clothes - a magnificent opulent silk robe adorned with
golden threads and bejewelled with the most exotic of gems and golden
ornamentation. On his head he wore a splendid eye-catching turban glittering
with diamonds and even the elegant shoes he wore looked marvellous with their
rich texture and ornamental design.
The
metamorphosis in Mulla Nasrudin’s appearance was fascinating.
In one word,
Mulla Nasrudin looked Majestic – yes, dressed up in his magnificent attire,
Mulla Nasrudin he looked Regal – like a king.
He then
walked back towards the venue of the feast.
The moment
Mulla Nasrudin entered the banquet hall, the ushers were so dazzled on seeing this
majestic personage, that they immediately summoned the Chief Usher, who was so
impressed by this Regal Personality in front of him, that he was sure Nasrudin
was an aristocrat of very high rank, so he bowed in obeisance and conducted
Nasrudin to the VIP table to be seated amongst the crème-de-la-crème of elite
society. In fact, Mulla Nasrudin was seated right next to the Chief Guest.
The feast
began and a dish of wonderful Biryani was placed before Mulla Nasrudin.
Immediately,
Nasrudin picked up handfuls of Biryani in both his hands. With one hand he
began to rub the delicious rice on his turban and with the other hand he rubbed
a handful of Biryani on his robe. Then, he even sprinkled some Biryani on his
shoes.
The stunned
Chief Guest asked Nasrudin what he was doing.
“Your
Honour,” Nasrudin said, “these clothes got me in here for this feast. Surely
they deserve a portion of the food, don’t they?”
