I once read a quote about India attributed to Winston Churchill (who was against granting independence to India and hence he probably made this statement):
Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues and freebooters. All Indian leaders will be of low calibre and men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles. A day would come when even air and water would be taxed.
If it is indeed true that he really said this, Winston Churchill made this prophecy about India more 65 years ago.
As I watch the news on TV every evening and read the newspapers every morning, I wonder whether his predictions are really coming true.
I feel sad, helpless, as there is nothing I can do about it, but watch on haplessly.
Now we can only hope we will be spared the last part and, at least, air and water won’t be taxed.

The situation does look gloomy and the conditions are also working against it. Maybe, it not too late to usher in a Renaissance to empower the people. Leadership can no longer be trusted.
